Amazon.com Tyler Perry's Meet the Browns is a sitcom taken to the nth level. Brenda (Angela Bassett) is a single mom struggling to raise her family in Chicago. When she receives a letter inviting her to attend her father's funeral, she's not sure how to feel: Brenda never knew the man and hadn't interacted with that part of her family. But when she loses her job, she decides that now's the time to shake things up. (And, as a friend suggests, there's always the chance her father left her a little money.) While the film's central character grew up with incredible hardships (a prostitute for a mother and a pimp for a father who didn't stick around), writer-director-actor Perry takes every opportunity to inject a little humor into the vignettes. It is not her fault that she is too gorgeous and regal to be believable in the role, but Bassett--a superb dramatic actress--is sorely miscast here in a role where her subtleties are lost in all the fuss. Meet the Browns isn't Perry's best piece of work, but the fast-paced action and raucous dialogue provide enough fun to make the film worthwhile. With his name prefacing each movie, Perry has developed a franchise that doesn't fail to deliver what his fans are accustomed to: some variation of a dysfunctional family comedy and the appearance of his most famous character Madea--a cranky grandmother played by Perry himself that manages to draw laughs, even when her inclusion sometimes is superfluous. --Jae-Ha Kim
Product Description With nothing to lose, Brenda and her son travel from Chicago to small-town Georgia to meet a previously unknown side of the family. Nothing can prepare them for the fun-loving, crass Brown clan. Angela Basset and Rick Fox star in this romantic comedy about the power of love and family - from Tyler Perry.

quality storytelling March 19, 2010 B. E Jackson (Pennsylvania) I like Meet the Browns. I think the film delivers in numerous aspects- it contains comedy at all the appropriate moments, does an amazing job focusing on the serious drama side of the storyline, and even has a few romantic and sad moments which add some nice variety to the whole emotional experience.
I'd say the serious side involving the main characters (including a single mother with three kids) is the main part of the film that won me over. Everyone else is just a side character while the main focus is on the family itself.
When a single mother travels to Georgia because she receives a letter that her father recently died... well she wasn't exactly shocked. This is because she never even knew her father. However, it turns out later that the father plays a life-changing part in the storyline.
Another major element to the storytelling is the oldest son who's an aspiring basketball star. It turns out he's got enough potential to possibly go to the majors. He has his own problems though, which will you soon find out about. Does he eventually overcome them? You have to see the movie to find out.
However, the storyline does an *amazing* job showing how difficult it is for a single mother living in an apartment building and having to raise three kids by herself. The emotions you will feel range from feeling sorry for the family, to hoping they can eventually settle down somewhere nice with enough money to make it. The writers do a really fine job building emotion at all the appropriate moments.
The comedy bits happen to be REALLY whacked-out and just plain silly, but somehow it all blends together and mixes with the serious parts just fine. The writers of this film must be really talented to be able to blend two completely different emotions together and make it believable.
I recommend everyone watch this film for a splendid example of storytelling done right. You will be watching it from beginning to end and hoping for no interruptions.
Above average Tyler Perry February 21, 2010 William E. Goetsch (Aurora, Colorado) I have purchased to date, every Tyler Perry dvd. I enjoy Tyler Perry's writing, directing, producing and his acting ability. Tyler Perry has a knack for picking the RIGHT ON hollywood actor/actress for the characters in his movies.
Meet the Browns, Angela Bassett, genius to say the least! BUY THIS ONE!
Tyler Perry's Meet The Browns December 10, 2009 Arnita D. Brown (USA) A single mother living in inner city Chicago, Brenda has been struggling for years to make ends meet and keep her three kids off the street.
But when she's laid off with no warning, she starts losing hope for the first time - until a letter arrives announcing the death of a father she's never met.
Desperate for any kind of help, Brenda takes her family to Georgia for the funeral. But nothing could have prepared her for the Browns, her father's fun-loving, crass Southern clan. In a small-town world full of long afternoons and country fairs, Brenda struggles to get to know the family she never knew existed, and finds a brand new romance that just might change her life.
I have all of Tyler Perry's movies and plays, and this movie is very funny and entertaining. No one does it better but Tyler Perry.

dissapointed November 1, 2009 Carver C. Sobers (USA) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
My review is not about the video but about the product/presentation that was sent to me. I did not get to see my order until today, NOV 1, 2009. I have been very busy since I bought them. I was very dissapointed and I felt robbed when I opened this particular one Tyler Perry's Meet the Browns, because this DVD looks like a booth leg DVD, althou some boot leg DVD has label and design this one had nothing. I did not know which side was the play side because both sides looked alike, it looked like a blank DVD. I should have been told that I was going to get an inferior booth leg product, I would'nt have bought any.
This is bad and poor quality control by Amazon.com, I'm concerned. How can I order anything else knowing that it can be a bad product. I checked your return policy and its too late to return this DVD but this is not what I ordered, this product is an insult and there should be an exception. In fact Amazon.com should be interested in seeing the product I received to be able to correct what happened.
