Amazon.com essential video Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones star as Gus McCrae and Woodrow Call, aging cowboys and former Texas rangers and who organize a 2,500 mile cattle drive for one last great adventure in this excellent 1989 miniseries adaptation of Larry McMurtry's novel. The best friends, who steal the herd from a gang of Mexican cattle rustlers, drive their herd from Texas to Montana, battling horse thieves, angry Indian tribes, and a renegade half-breed killer named Blue Duck (Frederic Forrest) on a mission of revenge. The excellent cast also includes Robert Urich as cardsharp and former Ranger Jake Spoon, Anjelica Huston as McCrae's old flame Clara Allen, Danny Glover, Ricky Schroder, Diane Lane, Chris Cooper, D.B. Sweeney, Steve Buscemi, and even a small role for author Larry McMurtry. Australian director Simon Wincer shows a tremendous capacity for balancing sweeping drama and intimacy against the gorgeous landscape of the American Southwest, giving a grandly epic feel to the film despite its small-screen target and limited budget, and for forging memorable characters of even the smallest supporting parts. The heart of the drama belongs to McCrae and Call, memorably etched by Duvall and Jones as the last of the range romantics. In the age of revisionist Westerns, this excellent cattle-drive drama nicely maintains an old-fashioned feeling while still showing the dark side of the American West. Winner of seven Emmy Awards and responsible for two miniseries sequels (Return to Lonesome Dove and Dead Man's Walk) and a TV series. --Sean Axmaker

Lonesome Dove January 31, 2010 Bea Harrell (Glenpool, OK USA) This is the classic western. It has everything a dedicated western lover wants. It has, humor, a bit of romance, realistic action, and it actually has a credible story line!
Lonesome Dove - BluRay version January 30, 2010 Greg (Roswell, Ga. United States) Although this is my first review of a movie I'm no rookie when it comes to high definition video. I bought my first HDTV in Dec. 2000 when OTA (Over the Air) signals were just beginning and I saw the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City in HD. So why am I reviewing this DVD? This is the best video transfer of a movie that I have ever seen - period ! If you like the series do not hestitate to buy it. It is in two words . . . absolutely phenomenal. As far as content is concerned, it is exactly like the standard definition DVD that was released some time ago. That was the technical description of it, but as a western movie it also ranks high on my list. This is one of those rare movies that draws you into the story and never lets go. So if you like a great western with a beautiful picture this is it.
Fast shipping, decent product January 27, 2010 S. Schweiger 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
The BluRay was shipped quickly with good mail packaging, however was not aware the disc inside the movie case was free floating, with minor scratches on the disc. It still plays, however not in "new" condition as marked.
Excellent story about friendship and the old west January 21, 2010 tippy-toes (Villa Grove, CO) This saga warms the heart. It is a great story about the friendship amongst grown men, the tribulations of journeying across the country on horseback and of course the element of love. The characters are likeable and the development of each of them is thorough. My husband and I watch this movie over and over again, never getting sick of it. Highly recommended.
Good old times? January 9, 2010 Dalenum Ton (Suva, Fiji) This western highlights the determination that drove some incredible people to risk their life in order to accomplish amazing tasks. I can't even begin to imagine what America looked like back then. Certainly a beautiful wild place where you could have all the adventure you ever wanted and more danger than you could ever wish. The filming is relatively good considering it was done some 20 years ago.
