Amazon.com Roland Joffé (The Killing Fields) directs this fuzzy effort at a David Lean-like epic without David Lean's sense of emotional proportion. Lean's most important screenwriting collaborator, Robert Bolt, in fact wrote The Mission, which concerns a Jesuit missionary (Jeremy Irons) who establishes a church in the hostile jungles of Brazil and then finds his work threatened by greed and political forces among his superiors. Robert De Niro is briefly effective as a callous soldier who kills his own brother and then turns to Irons's character to oversee his penance and conversion to the clergy. The narrative and dramatic forces at work in this movie should be more stirring and powerful than they are--the problem being that Joffé is too removed from them to allow us in. --Tom Keogh

a great movie February 26, 2010 SamT (San Diego, USA) This is a great movie. I saw it years ago and just recently bought it on DVD. This is based on a true story, which always makes it better in my opinion. The extra features on the two disc set are very interesting, as they document how an actual group of native peoples in South America where used in making this movie. My DVD had an error on it on the main feature about half way through the movie, and it was brand new with no scratches, so I don't know if there was a bad batch of DVDs or if it was just mine. It was nothing I couldn't fast forward through, but I did miss a couple of lines of dialogue. Other reviews break down what the movie was about, so I'm not going to get into that here. I think this movie is somewhat of a hidden treasure, especially for fans of Robert DeNiro or Jeremey Irons. And there are some good moral lessons in the film as well. Highly recommended.
The Mission DVD. February 23, 2010 K. J. Craig (Australia) Unfortunately the DVD purchased is not a Compatible product to the system used in Australia.
Therefore the DVD does not operate with the Australian DVD players.
A Master Stroke February 21, 2010 David Baldwin (Philadelphia,PA USA) For starters cinematographer Chris Menges' work here ranks with the greatest of all time. How he captures the beauty of the South American landscape is at once mesmerizing and breathtaking. Ennio Morricone's score is downright ethereal ranking with his masterwork in Sergio Leone's "Once Upon A Time In The West". Menges captured Oscar gold but it eluded the maestro losing to the score for "Round Midnight". Their collective contributions not only serves the film but acts as a Greek chorus to the action on screen. The film's critics gave grudging respect to their work but dismissed other aspects of the film. Most notably their barbs were directed at Robert Bolt's script stating that there was a predictability to it and a certain inevitability to the film's conclusion. The response to that would be there is a basis in history here and it doesn't always end the way we like it. I think their missing the point in that the missionary work of the Jesuit priests on the surface may appear to be doomed but their actions live on in the hearts of the natives most notably the youngest. This is a difficult sell to challenge your audience this way and kudos should go out to both Bolt and director Roland Joffee for tackling such ambitious material. The film is anchored by terrific performances by Jeremy Irons as Father Gabriel who practices reason and nonviolence to persuade the Spanish and Portuguese colonists not to dismantle the Mission and Robert DeNiro as Rodrigo a mercenary turned Jesuit priest who feels agression should be met with agression. Most impressive is Ray McAnally as the Pope's emissary sent to mediate the dispute but with a heavy heart must side with the colonists because of the internal politics in Europe. This is an extremely thoughtful film that will resonate with you for a lifetime.
The Mission February 8, 2010 This is such as awesome movie (The Mission), that I just had to buy a copy and view it over and over.
Also since the Movie SCORE (Nella Phantasia) was eventually redone by Sarah Brightman with her adding lyrics to it, it just tied both together perfectly!
If you see the movie and listen to the SCORE, then you have to also listen to Sarah Brightman's version of: Nella Phantasia.
Great disk set. February 5, 2010 Patrick G. Johnston (Pat Johnston, Mesa, AZ) Great box set I gave my wife for Christmas. Easy to order, quickly shipped, arrived well packaged. Excellent movie, well acted and wonderful location scenery.
