Amazon.com What if the Montagues and Capulets had lived in The O.C.? Or that lissome young cast could be beamed back to fair Verona? The result might look a wee bit like Virgin Territory a period Italian adventure-romance, starring two very contemporarily gorgeous young stars, Mischa Barton and Hayden Christensen. The film is a pastiche of adventure, romance, action, comedy, period drama, and mistaken identity, set in medieval Italy against the backdrop of the black plague(!). Spirits are mostly high, however, as young Lorenzo (Christensen), Pampinea (Barton) and their cohorts frolic in the countryside, away from the nasty disease, amid mistaken identities, family honor, and as much wild flirtation as 14th century Italy would tolerate. Which, it turns out, is quite a bit. Barton and Christensen look a bit out of place in their heavy period costumes, but they are lovely enough--and have enough chemistry--to make their longing love story feel true. Lorenzo has been bewitched by a kiss he received blindfolded, and has pledge his heart to that lady. "I have a love," he tells Pampinea--and holds her, pining, at arm's length. Tim Roth has a grand time in a supporting role, twirling an invisible mustache and wreaking havoc in town and countryside alike. Most of his lines are too raunchy to be quoted here, but it's enough to know his fiendish comic delivery is impeccable. Fans of films like The Princess Bride--and of course, The O.C.--will love getting lost in the lush beauty of Virgin Territory. --A.T. Hardly Virgin Territory, But Has A Charm Of Its Own January 25, 2009 Servo (Atlanta, GA USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
David Leland's 2007 romantic comedy Virgin Territory (based on Giovanni Boccaccio's The Decameron) is best described as a cross between A Knight's Tale, The Princess Bride and American Pie. Whereas those films generally hit their marks, Virgin Territory will leave you somewhat wanting. For every scene that worked, there were a couple of scenes where the payoff didn't quite do justice to the setup. Yet for all of the film's faults there is, surprisingly, enough comedy, romance, action and "can't look away from it" charm to it all that makes Virgin Territory marginally recommendable. The production design, costumes and the soundtrack aren't exactly lacking either. Stars Hayden Christensen (Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith) as charming rogue Lorenzo de Lamberti, Mischa Barton (The O.C.) as poor little rich girl Pampinea, and Tim Roth (The Incredible Hulk) as the rascally evil Gerbino. A part of Anchor Bay's Unzipped Collection for language and nudity, Virgin Territory features Anamorphic Widescreen (1.78:1) video; 5.1 Dolby Surround audio; plus the following Special Features: Behind the Scenes of Virgin Territory, Censored Scenes of Sexuality, David Walliams: Cart Pusher featurette. Running time is 97 minutes.
"A movie to spend some funny time..." January 19, 2009 Abner Ramos Delgado (PR USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
"If you are expecting "Titanic" grateness from this film, you are going to see it for the wrong reasons. The movie is one of those kind of film with no complication in plot, a bit humorous, a bit romantic. The great movie that you want to see just to kill time in a funny way. I laugh a bit and was touched a little bit also. During the whole movie I see it has a medieval adaptation of American Pie or Porky's. I don't gave them the full 5 stars because they should have gave the plot a bit more complication, make you be at the edge of your chair. How ever it is good to see it just for the fun of it..."
One of those bad "lets put young actors into a bawdy, medieval romp" film. January 15, 2009 Doctor Trance (MA, United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
While the film could have been an interesting big screen adaptation of the Casanova tale, with lots of young and up and coming actors and actresses, it falls into the trap of looking like modern day actors forced into these medieval roles. They just don't pull off looking like they should be in that time frame. Many, many comedic attempts have tried to go the bawdy romp route and failed, and this one is no different. For a much better movie, and similar theme, look no further than television and the British production (shown in the US on Masterpiece Theater) of Casanova (Masterpiece Theater). It's a tremendously better play on the same plot, and you can see the production quality and performances are all a notch or two above this sophmoric, direct to DVD flick.
A good idea gone bad December 2, 2008 Jem (MD, USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I selected this DVD because I like Hayden Christensen and I wanted to see him in sexy medieval leather wielding a sword. Not all direct-to-DVD films are bad, but this one just proves why they get a bad rap. Sadly, even in those tight pants, Christensen couldn't salvage this mess. The premise sounded like "The Princess Bride" without the fantasy elements, a romantic comedy. Only, this movie really needed some Rodents of Unusual Size or screeching eels to liven it up. Those that think the dialog in the Star Wars movies is wooden should see this. I don't think it's the fault of the actors, they weren't given much to work with. The plot is so thin, everyone fell right through. The narrator, rather than a charming grandfather trying to engage his grandson in a love story, is a starving artist who took over the church he was painting when the real priest died of the plague. Lorenzo (Christensen) is a rake breaking hearts across the city. Pampinea (Barton) is a young noble fending off the unwelcome advances of a nefarious duke/noble/something. He's the villain - you know because he kindly dresses himself and all his lackeys in black. Oh, and he wants to kill Lorenzo. Lorenzo hides out in a convent full of horny, beautiful young nuns who fall over themselves to have sex with him. Pampinea ends up hiding there as well, only he doesn't know it's her. You see a lot of gratuitous nudity here (hence the R rating), but never the two stars. Everyone ends up down the road at Pampinea's villa. Evil villain fights Lorenzo and loses, everyone gets their true love. Blah. The movie was VERY slow, and so boring at times that I found myself fast-forwarding. The creators tried to inject humor into the story, but it always felt forced. Pampinea's girlfriends are captured on the way to the villa and end up examining a line of penises and finding them so different from man to man. Eh. There was way too much of the villain, who spent all his time blustering, and the film couldn't decide if it was going for slapstick comedy or sarcastic wit. It didn't succeed at either. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this to anyone but die-hard fans of the actors. And they should probably rent it first.
Funny and Sexy... November 27, 2008 RKA (NEW YORK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Folks, please don't expect too much from this lightweight sexy comedy that reminded me a little of Pasolini's Decameron. Hayden Christensen is passable as the object of the love starved 'virgins' and is worth watching while you do some other task, like plucking a chicken. Rent instead of buying; I don't think too many would care to see this twice.
