Amazon.com essential video Molly Ringwald established herself as the teen queen of the '80s in this fresh comedy. The movie is a day in the life of Samantha, whose 16th birthday is turning out to be anything but sweet. All the traumas of teendom come down on one long day, which sees Samantha surrounded by dithery relatives, mooning over a high school hunk, and pursued by a sawed-off Lothario. Sixteen Candles marked the directing debut of John Hughes, and its goofy energy displayed a promising talent with a great ear for high school lingo ... a promise neglected since Hughes became, after Home Alone, a one-man entertainment industry. There are some pretty crass moments (Why the stereotype of the foreign-exchange student from Asia?), but Ringwald's steady appeal smoothes over the rough spots. As the pubescent, self-styled lady-killer, Anthony Michael Hall turns in a hilarious portrait of a young swinger; he and Ringwald would reteam with Hughes for The Breakfast Club, another key teen picture of the decade. --Robert Horton

High School Tribulations February 6, 2010 P. Edgington (Niedermohr, Germany) This is an old favorite of mine. Trying to keep up with the cliques while maintaining your real friends never stops being a challenge to teens ... then and today. Great DVD.
Not this version January 4, 2010 Michelle Hobbs I love this movie, but not this version. Buy a different edition than this. It's okay if you just want to watch the movie. I don't like the extra features at all. People who had nothing to do with the movie were talking about it. The features were not special. Buy this movie, but not this edition.
Should Be Rated R December 18, 2009 D. Stokes (Columbia, TN USA) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Like most thirty-something females, this film is a cult classic - Or should I say was. This particular DVD release is not the same edit they released in the theaters or to TV. Beware, within the first 15 min, you hear an f-bomb, s-bomb, a few other mild swears, and frontal female nudity for more than a few seconds. I only wish we would have known this before we'd hyped it up to our 12 and 13 year old daughter and son for family movie night...A little embarrassed to say the least. As read in previous reviews, most of the music that became popular with the film originally, got canned due to outrageous licensing fees on this version and is not present on this product. Steer clear. Look for the Theatrical release, if one exists. Shame on Universal for squeaking this one by. Consumers remember things like this.
This is getting good December 3, 2009 bernie (Arlington, Texas) Revolutionary in its time, now it plays just as well; however, you spend a lot of time thinking about this is where it all started. We all have our favorite parts and people. What is that at the fountain? No it can't be, Joan Cusack? And this is the last time you will see Jamie Gertz on the bench.
You will have to watch it several times to take it all in.

It is a double due for Samantha Baker (Molly Ringwald). It is her birthday and the school dance. Tomorrow her sister is getting married. So Grand Parents are converging with their grandparent quirks.
Turns out hat Samantha like Jake who is going with Caroline. Mean time back at the dance other agendas arise with the geeks challenging Farmer Ted (a young Anthony Michael Hall) to do it with Samantha or fork over several floppies. We see parties and their aftermath. In the end can Farmer Ted place all the people where they belong? In the mean time he says, "This, is getting good."
Weird Science (Flashback Edition)
