While scoring high-profile credits as a screenwriter (including The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, and Raiders of the Lost Ark), Lawrence Kasdan made his directorial debut with this steamy, contemporary film noir in the tradition of Double Indemnity and other classics from the 1940s. In one of his most memorable roles, William Hurt plays a Florida lawyer unwittingly drawn into a web of deceit spun by Kathleen Turner (in her screen debut) as a married socialite who plots to kill off her husband with Hurt's assistance. Kasdan's dialogue is a hoot (sometimes it borders on satire), and the sultry atmosphere is a perfect complement to the perspiration-soaked chemistry between Hurt and Turner, whose love scenes caused quite a stir when the film was released in 1981. John Barry's score sets the provocative mood, and both Ted Danson and Mickey Rourke are splendid in memorable supporting roles. --Jeff Shannon

This movie is one of the best movies. It is ageless. It has everything, it's sexy, suspenseful, a powerful drama with two great celebrities. This movie with all its twists and turns will not disappoint!

Lawrence Kasdan is a great screenwriter. (If only George Lucas had hired him to write the "Star Wars" prequels...) His directorial debut is an over-ripe homage to film noir. On the assumption you haven't seen "Body Heat", I won't say anything about the story, except that the film's most-famous line should tell you exactly what's going on. The interest lies in seeing how it all plays out. And though reviewers often compare "Body Heat" with other noir classics, the one it most-closely resembles thematically is rarely mentioned.
Watching "Body Heat" for the third or fourth time (I saw it in its original run), I was aware that Kasdan introduces several plot points and coincidences that aren't needed to make the story play the way it does. Removing them would actually strengthen the film. But you probably won't notice them on first viewing, paying more attention to Kathleen Turner's legs. (I was looking at T&A, but it wasn't Turner's.)
There's a lush John Barry score, which includes a section (repeated several times) in which he perfectly pastiches Bernard Herrmann.
The supplementary material reveals that Alan Ladd Jr wanted Kasdan to remove William Hurt's mustache, stating that it made him look "sleazy". It would be more correct to say that it makes him look stupid.
The Blu-ray transfer is good, but lacks the constant extreme sharpness I (perhaps unreasonably) have come to expect. Regardless, it's better than what you'd see in a theater. I'd give it a B. One reviewer's claim that this is a terrible transfer with washed-out color certainly doesn't describe the disk /I/ purchased.

A convoluted and erotic murder mystery requires close attention which you are willing to give it. Kathleen Turner and William Hurt give excellent performances. This is in the class of "Dial M for Murder" with Grace Kelly or "Witness for the Prosceution" with Charles Laughton. It is certainly in the top 100 best films ever made. Most famous line: "You're not very smart; I like that in a man."-Kathleen Turner to William Hurt.

Body Heat is one for the library. Always intriguing to watch. One tip. Why buy new DVD's when you can buy used from a reputable seller?. Used from a good seller is just as good as new (shssssss) trust me. The trick is, when you buy anything used from the Amazon web site, buy from "Amazon fulfilment" or a seller with at least a six figure rating. This works with almost anything you buy on Amazon. You'll always win.
