    Editorial Reviews:

    Amazon.com essential video
The most viscerally frightening and disturbing homicidal maniac picture since The Silence of the Lambs, Seven is based on an idea that's both gruesome and ingenious. A serial killer forces each of his victims to die by acting out one of the seven deadly sins. The murder scene is then artfully arranged into a grotesque tableau, a graphic illustration of each mortal vice. From the jittery opening credits to the horrifying (and seemingly inescapable) concluding twist, director David Fincher immerses us in a murky urban twilight where everything seems to be rotting, rusting, or molding; the air is cold and heavy with dread. Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt are the detectives who skillfully track down the killer--all the while unaware that he has been closing in on them, as well. Gwyneth Paltrow and Kevin Spacey are also featured, but it is director Fincher and the ominous, overwhelmingly oppressive atmosphere of doom that he creates that are the real stars of the film. It's a terrific date movie--for vampires. --Jim Emerson

I've also loved this movie since highschool, but I haven't watched it since I got it yet. I'm glad I got this edition and not the single disc edition. The packaging was pretty cool and came in tip top shape.

4 out of 5 stars Far From The Usual Norm   May 5, 2009
    Untitled (nowhere)
Well, it's kind of irreverant to this review, but my new favorite movie genre is the thriller. And movies like Se7en are the exact reason why.

Se7en is a chilling and very fascinating tale about a killer that acts out the seven deadly sins to make them suffer. In ways, Se7en Seems like a prototype of Saw, then again, not really. The killer is very idetifyable to Jigsaw, another villian that has similar motivations from the (I'm sure you've heard of it) Physcological (yes, physcological) horror film Saw. But unlike Saw, who ultimately wants his victims to live through the pain to learn from it, John Doe wants his victims to ultimately die, and suffer because he finds them disgusting and ultimately vile. John Doe is probably one of the most unthreatning villians, but nonetheless an interesting one, far more developed and interesting than the boring villian of a lame slaher film (note I'm not talking about films like Texas Chainsaw Massacre or Halloween, rather lame films like Scream).

The deaths are pretty realistic and fitting for the type of situation. While they aren't the most gruesome i've seen (I don't really find things gruesome, so maybe I'm just unfazed), they are rather creative, and they are far more intelligent than what most people would imagine. I won't spoil any of it for you, but all the victims that are killed are very gross to look at. Some are implied however, but that's pretty understandable when it comes to a couple (wait until you get to lust and you will understand why they had to imply that one).

As far as the rest of the film goes, the setting is grimy, and rife with decay. And this film shows that Brad Pitt is a good actor, no matter how bad some people might want to make him look, mostly because of his status as a sex icon (methinks some people are kind of jealous). The movie does not reveal how it might end until we start to get to the end, but it will definitely pull your mind a bit, as this movie ends in a much different way that one would probably expect it from the beginning. So if you are getting thoughts about how it might end in a predictable, don't exactly take a instant death quizz beforehand.

The bad parts? Like some mystery films, the movie does lose some of it's excitment because you already know what happens, unlike some movies like Fantasia (which is music based so you can view it again and again) or Dead Alive (because it's there when you need gore). It's definitely not a film that you watch once and forget about it. This is a movie that is worthy of discussion, for sure.

5 out of 5 stars great movie   April 4, 2009

This is one of those films were you have to think. The violence is not there but you can imagine it.

5 out of 5 stars This movie helped the SAW series become what it is today.   March 22, 2009

This film is packed with sick, gross, disgusting and many other explicit images but the plot line is believable as well as disturbing and who can forget the controversial ending this film is notorious for.

    5 out of 5 stars Se7en   March 1, 2009

    Fantastic DVD. Highly recommended.
The first disc is the movie itself and the commentary by Director David Fincher, Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman. The second disc is a bunch of fun cool deleted scenes/alternate ending (not actually an alternate ending just filmed differently). It also has a few extras like how they came up with the books and how they came up with the opening credits.

    Great movie and fantastic packaging.
