Amazon.com essential video This massive 1977 adaptation by director Richard Attenborough (Gandhi) of Cornelius Ryan's novel features an all-star cast in an epic rendering of a daring but ultimately disastrous raid behind enemy lines in Holland during the Second World War. A lengthy and exhaustive look at the mechanics of warfare and the price and futility of war, the film is almost too large for its aims but manages to be both picaresque and affecting, particularly in the performance of James Caan. The impressive cast includes Robert Redford, Gene Hackman, Anthony Hopkins, Laurence Olivier, Dirk Bogarde, Sean Connery, and Liv Ullmann among others. While not a classic war film, it nevertheless manages to be a consistently interesting and exciting adventure. --Robert Lane

five star war movie December 30, 2009 Michael P. Dobey (colorado springs) This is a realistic and good war movie. War is hell and it's good to see a battle that didn't in allied victory protrayed onscreen. It makes you realize that like all wars that one could have been lost without alot of sacrifice. It's a sweeping movie and is historically accurate which is another plus. ON blu ray this movie looks better than ever , it could have been remastered probably though. The colors restored and brought out more. However the print is a good one with no lines or blotches so at least that's a big plus. Still any movie on blu should be restored ; especially a excellent true to life war story that reminds us that the even the best plans of war can go very wrong.
Great HD transfer! December 17, 2009 Francis L. Valente (New York City) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Really enjoyed the movie and Blu-Ray transfer was top-notch! Was hoping for more supplemental material! only trailers included! But for the price great deal!
A Great Classic War Movie December 16, 2009 TT (CA., USA) An excellent movie to watch over and over again. Blue-Ray quality isn't at its best, picture looks faded and lack of contrast. If you already have the DVD copy, don't need to buy again.
great buy December 16, 2009 David V.D.B (Iowa) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Overall a great price for a blu-ray and a classic movie. The fact that the editing of the film differs from others had little impact on the purchase. Would be happy to purchase again.
An intense, historically accurate war film November 26, 2009 Roger J. Buffington (Huntington Beach, CA United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This was an ambitious film that succeeds in its mission of entertaining the viewer, but does not quite make it into the top-tier of war films. Operation Market-Garden was conceived by General Montgomery as an attempt to drive a nail into the coffin of the German Wehrmacht, and take the allies to the Rhine. Instead, the operation failed and remains controversial to this day. James Caan and Sean Connery in particular turn in excellent performances among an all-star cast.
I suppose what deprives this film of its fifth star is the simple fact that (in my opinion) it has a bit too much action and not enough characterization and storyline. There is just a lot of combat in this film, which is, after all to be expected. And the action somewhat swamps the storyline. Nevertheless, this is an excellent film that war-film buffs will enjoy more than once. RJB.
