I loved this movie February 11, 2010 Chris S. Jackson (Las Vegas, NV) Although the Incredible Hulk has its moments, I still love this version of the Hulk better. I love how they delved into the psychology of Bruce Banner and why the Hulk is essentially an angry, hurt child. Ang Lee is a lot better director than Lettier in my opinion and aside from Norton, every other cast member is superior in this version. This will always be the quintessential Hulk movie for me.
Both Hulks Smash!!!...just in different ways. January 11, 2010 Gerald E. Bodtmann (Wayne, NJ) After reading several reviews on here, and as a longtime True Hulk Fan, I am here to say that both movies ROCKED!! They were just done in totally different ways. 2003's 'Hulk" and 2008's "The Incredible Hulk" both showed us key parts of the Hulks character and did in a way that really tapped into what the character means.
Now, "Hulk" was an amazingly done movie. Ang Lee tapped into so much with this one. First off, there were stories told in the comics as to why the Hulk is the way he is psychologically (generally an incredibly strong 3 yr old having a temper tantrum) and where it all came from. This movie explored that deeply and added to it. For anyone out there that loves watching a movie where you need to think a little, this is a great movie. Especially, if you love psychology. It shows us what can eventualy happen to someone through years of torment or even one really big traumatic event and how that can really screw said person up. Just in this, it manifests as a Green Hulking beast that can use a tree as a baseball bat. LOL. However, Though I agree with some things that others have said here about magnificent set shots, I am not always sold on the CGI. Some scenes look incredible (i.e. busting out of desert base and the streets of San Fransisco) and some look a little less done. I know a lot has to do with Ang Lee's interrpertation of the physiology of the Hulk (The more angry he gets, the bigger he gets. The more angry, the more gamma, the more greener), but as a true hulk fan, I have my days with this theory. The Hulk never needed to get bigger to get stronger. That was the great thing about him. Other than a few indescrepancies in the theology of the Hulk, I really enjoy this movie. Ang Lee does bring to it a very artistic, albeit, sometimes over thought, vision of what the Hulk is and how he operates. I know a lot had to do with his wife actually being someone that does research in biology and gave him real world explanations for everything.
"The Incredible Hulk", the most recent of the two movies, and primarily a reboot, bypasses a lot of the thought provoking part of the Hulk and brings us back to the "Hulk Smash" mentality. It also gives many nods to the television show from the 70"s that most of us grew up on. For that reason alone, I love this movie!! However, I thought it superior in a few ways to its predecessor. First off, I thought the Hulk looked better. In Ang Lee's version, the Hulk was almost "TOO" Bulky and the first time you see him (again, an overthinking artistic vision) was supposed to represent a toddler...so the hulk almost had some baby fat. Now, Seamlessly, speaking CGI wise, I think the first hulk was better. I am speaking strictly on the actual look of the hulk. In this version, He looked more human, more like the comic. And in some scenes (the grotto scene) flat out looked awesome!! There really was not that many psychological references in it. The few that were are really only pertaining to how Bruce Banner can control the Hulk or if he remembers anything that happens as the Hulk. Otherwise, there is quite a lot of action in it. None that seems too extreme.
There was also a nice balance on how they incorporated the show and comic lore together in this movie. My one gripe with it, and I think this may have actually been a gripe of Edward Norton's as well, was that there is a lot of deleted scenes that had they left it in, may have explained more and made it more thought provoking. The director, Louis Letterier, was trying to go for the knockout punch by keeping the movie short and sweet. However, just the deleted opening sequence alone, with Bruce in the artic, would have explained a lot and added a nod to many comic book fans (watch and see what I mean). Plus, some scenes that could have been extended might have added an extra element to the movie.
So in closing, I do recommend both films!! I think they are both highly entertaining (on different levels) and lets face it, No one can have a bad time watching the Hulk smash up everything!! Have a good day, Amazon Community!!
The Hulk I Like Better December 18, 2009 Tyler S. (Brentwood, CA United States) In comparison to the 08 Edward Norton Hulk, I think this Hulk film was way more enjoyable. I will say that Norton's Hulk has a better audience range, while this film appeals to those select few who enjoy psychological examination in the superhero genre. That is precisely why I like this installment more: the stronger emotional depth.
Hulk definately nails psychology of Bruce Banner. It manages to use its dramatic scenes way more effectively than its action scenes. We get to see how a Bruce Banner would actually feel in this overbearing situation. While our newer Hulk may be more exciting, I believe the 03 version had much more realism to offer. The funny thing is that both films have extremely talented casts, the difference is the director. Ang Lee knows how to make an artwork out of film, while Louis Leterrier abandons human emotion. The reason why people like the newer film more, is because it is a faster paced action film, while 03 Hulk is hard to label an action film. I call it a science-fiction drama. While it has dynamic and lengthy fight scenes, audiences didn't want to sit through long scenes of talking to see them. Another thing that bothered the world was the editing of the film. While it may be painful the first time to look at 3 split screens every 4 minutes, it becomes much more rewarding after a few viewings. Seeing different angles provides a analytical realism.
As far as our Blu-ray release, I am somewhat satisfied. While I got a good sized package of special features, some of them were reused, which in my opinion is embarassing. Don't expect much, because there's not a lot sweet extras. The problem is that they didn't plan for a big blu-ray when it was release, it being filmed in 02/03.
So anyway, bottom line: Hulk has more depth than its follower. While this one may not be as full of energy, it definately puts the Hulk in a realistic perspective. Expect great performances and a tragic superhero. While it may not be the best action superhero movie, its one of the best drama superhero movies.
Great flick December 5, 2009 Brian K. Schroeter (Usa) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Though this isn't the Incredible Hulk, The Hulk is still a great movie. Jennifer Connelly is beautiful! I love both Hulk movies. Sounds great on Blu-Ray. Seller was great, fast shipping and great packaging.
Terrific Blu-Ray of a flawed but good comic book movie. September 23, 2009 John Lindsey (Socorro, New Mexico USA.)
Dr. Bruce Banner (Eric Bana) has been conducting experiments with gamma radioation until one night he tries to save a friend's life in the lab and gets blasted with a dose of radioation. Banner survivors but whenever he becomes angry or outraged becomes a powerful and superstrong green skinned brute named The Hulk who's real gentle inside but doesn't like to be messed with. General Ross (Sam Elliot) and Glen Talbot (Josh Lucas) suspects something is going wrong, Bruce's love interest Betty (Jennifer Connely) must try to help with Banner's problems and that's the same for Banner's long lost father David (Nick Nolte) who enhances himself as well to become an absorbing monster.
Quite different Sci-fi thriller based on Marvel's comic hero created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby is directed by Ang Lee. This one maybe a bit slow for some folks and didn't too well with audiences and some critics even critized for not having much Hulk action, Lee wanted to do an artsy take on the beloved Marvel character for i thought this was a very interesting movie. The casting was quite good even to Connelly who is just as sexy as ever, the special effects by ILM is flawed on the Hulk but in the second movie he looked better. Ang Lee did tried to get a major audience but at least he tried, the new Hulk movie was a vast improvement but this is still worth a watch.
This Blu-Ray offers a kickass high defination transfer and terrific sound with good extras like audio commentary, deleted scenes, and featurettes plus picture-in-picture click access for interviews and behind the scenes footage as you watch the movie.
