Amazon.com Light bulbs speckle the sky instead of stars in City of Ember, a fantasy in which a secret city has been built to preserve mankind from worldwide disaster. But over time, the purpose of the city is lost--and the city gradually decays. As power failures threaten to bring on the collapse of everything, young messenger Lina Mayfleet (Saoirse Ronan, Atonement) discovers damaged instructions for leaving the city. Her friend, pipeworker Doon Harrow (Harry Treadaway, Brothers of the Head), helps her find the hidden mechanisms that will let everyone escape...but the city's corrupt Mayor (Bill Murray) is more interested in personal gain and tries to stop Lina. City of Ember begins marvelously; the story unfolds smoothly, the production design is rich and engaging, the young leads are charming (Ronan is particularly good), and Murray is as superb as ever. Unfortunately, the movie starts to stumble; some plot turns are baffling (there seems to be some connective tissue left on the cutting room floor) and what should be an action climax flounders with subpar special effects. But even when the movie loses its sure-footedness, there are delightful moments and visual wonders. The strong supporting cast includes Tim Robbins, Mary Kay Place (Sweet Home Alabama), Mackenzie Crook (The Office), Toby Jones (Infamous), and Marianne Jean-Baptiste (Secrets & Lies). --Bret Fetzer

For Those Who Enjoyed the Book March 7, 2010 Carol Jackson (Beautiful upstate SC) We watched this movie one night, the entire family having read the book. The "city" itself was worth the view (what a concept!), and the details were wonderful, i.e. repaired clothes and electrical tape EVERYWHERE. The casting was adequate, Bill Murray making a particularly fine mayor. Ok, so the screenplay didn't exactly follow the book, but still was close enough to satisfy fans. Worth a watch.
Couldn't get into this one. January 19, 2010 MommaMia (NY) Neither I nor my children could get past the first 15 minutes of this one. Although the young girl was adorable and precocious, she wasn't enough to carry the movie alone. It was dismal. The storyline wasn't strong. The idea seemed intriguing, however, the final product missed the mark. Skip this one.
Highly Entertaining - Imaginative January 15, 2010 Petoskey Bill (Petoskey, MI United States) We did not find this boring at all. Being older, some PG rated movies are a little light in the adult attention holding, unless they insert adult humor. City of Ember did not need to do this. The only real disappointment was Bill Murry's role as the BAD GUY. He has a hard time selling it on the screen. You should enjoy this immensely and it should get you thinking.
Family Friendly Sci-Fi January 2, 2010 Scott Asher The world is going to be uninhabitable, so a collection of the worlds best scientists create Ember, a city built underground designed to last 200 years giving the inhabitants a safe place to stay prior to their re-emergence on the surface. The problem is that the people of Ember have forgotten about the surface and the Builder's 200 year limit. So when the city starts to fall apart and the generator stops working smoothly the inhabitants are left wondering if the end was coming. Two young people find clues that lead them to the truth that there is something more beyond the darkness around Ember and they set out to find their way out.
This is a charming movie with strong leads, particularly Saoirse Ronan (from Atonement,) who shines again in this film. The story starts to fall apart logically at times, leaving quite a bit unclear. The special effects (see the river for instance) are very sub-par for a current film. However, my children aged 3 to 10 all sat quietly through the whole movie with no lack of interest and my wife and I also enjoyed the film. Appealing to such a broad audience is a rare achievement.
I'd watch it again and I'd recommend it to others. It is good clean entertainment and a great lead in to the books.
City of Ember- December 28, 2009 Christina Vaillancourt I enjoyed the storyline. Exciting and fun. I hope the rest of the books in this series are made into movies. Good movie for a rainy day.Kids will really enjoy the mystery and adventure.
