Power, sex, delusion and tragedy were hallmarks of The Tudors: The Complete First Season, and they are all the more so in The Complete Second Season. The story of Britain's King Henry VIII (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), The Tudors is a dynamic history of a kingdom whose role on the 16th century world stage seems largely defined by Henry's narcissistic whims. Season two is very much taken up with Henry's determination to break free of papal authority in Rome and establish himself as head of England's church--all because he seeks to divorce Queen Catherine (Maria Doyle Kennedy) and marry Anne Boleyn (Natalie Dormer). Meanwhile, poor Catherine is kept locked away from court, unable to see her daughter Mary (Sarah Bolger) but refusing to relinquish her throne despite such punishment. As for Anne, she enjoys Henry's passion and commitment, but only to a point. When Henry marries her (in a union not recognized by Rome nor many British subjects) and she does not produce a male heir, his fickle attentions begin to wander, and a grand power play by Anne's father, Thomas Boleyn (Nick Dunning) begins to unravel. In time, Henry's focus shifts to soon-to-be third wife Jane Seymour (Anita Briem), whom the king sees as a symbol of his own redemption after the complications of his love life to date. Toward the end of The Complete Second Season, all the hints that Henry's lack of scruples is leading to a full-scale psychological breakdown begin to show, manifest in his many cruelties and--at the last minute--a clear sign of his notorious gluttony to come. Other stories woven into the colorful, lustful, intrigue-driven season two concern the fate of Henry's one-time mentor Sir Thomas More (Jeremy Northam), who refuses to cooperate with Henry's attempted separation from the Catholic faith and pays dearly for it. The pope himself (Peter O'Toole) turns up in sometimes near-comical responses to the king's intransigence, and the untimely fate of many interesting characters during Henry's wrathful sweep of his court proves a shocking development mid-season. All the actors are first-rate, even down to the smallest roles, and the show's spare but compelling use of nudity and sex scenes makes The Tudors powerful adult entertainment. --Tom Keogh

The series itself is fantastic, but the seller I purchased this item from did not send it in a reenforced package. The bubble wrap ruined the sleeve during shippinng.

    4 out of 5 stars A great yarn   January 30, 2010

Some reviewers knock the Tudors for not being historically accurate. From a basic fact standpoint, that's untrue. The events, event sequence and characters are all accurate to the historical record. However, like any work of historical fiction, the writer has to fill in blanks where details were simply not recorded by any historian. So what if the King Henry, by season 3, is 80 pounds lighter than what he's supposed to be? Does anyone knock a good Shakespearean actor for being too tall or having the wrong hair color? This is as good a drama as any, with the added benefit that the viewer walks away with a little knowledge of world history. Blu-ray quality is superb, with plenty of scenes (outdoors, gleaming jewels of the court, etc.) to show off the medium.

I purchased the first and second season--I should have taken the money outside and burned it instead.

5 out of 5 stars Totally gripping (again)   December 31, 2009
Irfan A. Alvi (Towson, MD USA)
This is the most gripping dramatic historical series I've ever seen. As I finished each episode, I could barely wait for the next one, and there were occasions when I watched two or three episodes back to back, getting me to bed late and leaving me tired the next day -- but it was worth it. It's said that time flies when you're having fun, and some of these episodes felt like only 5 or 10 minutes. My wife had the same response.

The power of this series is a result of achieving excellence in all facets. The actors are uniformly convincing, the scenery is authentic and transporting, and the pacing and dynamics of the plot have a perfect ebb and flow. Many key dimensions of the human experience are represented, such as romance, (hot) sex, power politics, attempts at justice, friendship, revenge, religious conflict, glimpses of ordinary life, and violence so brutal that we tender Americans can scarcely comprehend or stomach it.

As to historical accuracy, I'm not qualified to judge with expertise, but I suspect that they got the general contours reasonably right, even if some details are debatable. Moreover, none of us were actually there and reconstructing the past always involves much inference, so a useful approximation is all we can aim for anyway. I would hope that anyone watching or reading a historical work will know to take things with a grain of salt, especially the details.

Some lessons I drew from the series are: (a) I'm glad I don't live in the England of this period, (b) being King isn't all it's cracked up to be, and (c) check your ambition and stay away from highly powerful people, lest you fall out of favor and wind up damaged or worse.

Highly recommended to anyone interested in the European history of this period (particularly that of England), or to anyone who just enjoys great drama.

Note: I've watched all three seasons and they're all equally excellent, so I've posted this review for all three.
