Amazon.com It's not really a knock to say that nothing in Tropic Thunder is funnier than its first five minutes, so sly that--especially for people watching in theaters--you don't realize right away they are the opening minutes of the movie. This outrageous comedy begins with a series of fake previews, each introducing one of the main characters in the film-proper (not that there's anything proper about this film) and each bearing the familiar logo of a different motion picture studio: Universal, DreamWorks SKG, et al. Such playing fast and loose with corporate talismans verges on sacrilege, but it's an index of how much le tout Tinseltown endorses the movie as a demented valentine to itself. The premise is that the cast of a would-be "Son of Rambo" movie shooting in some Southeast Asian jungle get into a real shooting war with drug-smuggling montagnards. Don't ask--though the movie does have an answer--why such highly paid, usually ultra-pampered personnel as superhero Tugg Speedman (Ben Stiller), Mozart of fart comedy Jeff Portnoy (Jack Black), hip-hop artist Alpa Chino (Brandon T. Jackson), and five-time Oscar-winner Kirk Lazarus from Aus-try-leeah (Robert Downey Jr.) should be running through the jungle unattended and very vulnerable. It matters only that the real-life cast has a high time kidding their own profession and flexing their comedic muscles. Bonus points go to Stiller for co-writing the script (with Justin Theroux) and directing, and to Downey, brilliant as a white actor surgically turned black actor for his role and utterly committed to staying in character no matter what ("I don't drop character till I done the DVD commentary"). Be warned: The movie, too, is committed--to being an equal-opportunity offender. Its political incorrectness extends not only to Lazarus's black-like-me posturing but also Speedman's recent, Sean Penn-style Oscar bid playing a cognitively challenged farmboy--or, in Lazarus's deathless phrase, "going the full retard." Others in the cast include Steve Coogan as a director out of his depth, Nick Nolte as the Viet-vet novelist whose book inspired the film-within-the-film, Matthew McConaughey as Speedman's sun-blissed agent back home, and Tom Cruise--bald, fat-suited, and profane--as an epically repulsive studio head. Two hours running time is a mite excessive, but otherwise, what's not to like? --Richard T. Jameson

OMG, WHAT A FUNNY MOVIE! January 27, 2010 Magie (United States) Tropic Thunder was by far, one of my most FAV. movies ever! Granted there are some disgusting parts, but the movie is an on the floor, hysterical, tears running down your face kind of movie. It has a lot of big names, but each character brings something to the table, including Tom Cruise as Les Grossman. I have never laughed so hard in my whole life! This movie is not only funny, but it is super-action packed! However, I would NOT recommend this movie for kids under 17 as the content is pretty strong in the movie. However, I HIGHLY recommend this movie!
Tropic Thunder January 8, 2010 Arnita D. Brown (USA) A group of self-absorbed actors set out to make the most expensive war film. But after ballooning costs force the studio to cancel the movie, the frustrated director refuses to stop shooting, leading his cast into the jungles of Southeast Asia, where they encounter real bad guys. This movie is a knockout of a comedy that keeps you laughing and laughing constantly. Very, Very entertaining.
Worst movie purchased January 7, 2010 Beverly Keller 0 out of 4 found this review helpful
Fiance wanted this movie badly. Worst purchase I have made. Could not watch it. Language is just horrible.
Great Cast-Funny Movie January 2, 2010 L Gontzes (Athens, Greece) Tropic Thunder brings to the screen the story of five actors shooting a Vietnam-era Vietnam-themed movie in Vietnam. What starts off as a routine shooting in the rice patties and Jungles of S.E. Asia, turns out to be a nightmare (albeit a funny one) for a group of five clueless actors.
Don't look for the movie to make much sense; it doesn't and it's not supposed to, but it's so darn funny it will have you in tears (literally) on more than a few occasions.
Ben Stiller, Jack Black, Robert Downey Jr., Matthew McConaughey, Nick Nolte, Tom Cruise, and the rest of this AMAZING cast carry out their performances very well. The setting, the plot, the dialogues, the special effects, the humor (!!!), and the music are all very good.
In a nutshell, though it's probably not a movie you would want to add to your collection, it will definitely provide for an evening's entertainment. 4.5 Stars
I loved the concept and the screenplay is great! December 20, 2009 Linda Linguvic (New York City) This 2008 film had me laughing hysterically from the very beginning. It's a spoof about war movies and is full of sharp edged wit. Part of the fun was never knowing exactly what was coming next. Ben Stiller is the star and he also directed it and his sense of humor really comes through.
The plot is about a group of actors making a Vietnam War film epic. They are really bad at it and the first part of the movie had me laughing out loud as it depicted every stereotype that we are used to seeing in war films. But then it goes on. The actors are dropped into the jungle, thinking they are still making the movie. However, there's danger out there - real danger, and they are unwittingly thrown into a serious confrontation with a drug gang that rules the area. This doesn't stop it being funny though.
Robert Downey Jr. is cast as a white actor who dyes his skin to become black for the film. He is so good at it that I really thought he was black until the very end when he takes off his wig and wipes the dye off his face. Ben Stiller and the rest of the cast give really good performances. I loved the concept and the writing is great!
All I can say is a great big hooray for the cast, the crew and everyone connected with this film. I loved it!
