Amazon.com As the impresario behind gravity-defying Russian blockbuster Night Watch, it's inevitable that Hollywood would come calling for Timur Bekmambetov. With a studio budget and an international cast, including two Oscar winners, Timur cooks up a Hong Kong-styled actioner bursting with fast cars and big guns. Our unlikely hero is mild-mannered Chicago accountant Wesley Gibson (Atonement's James McAvoy), whose father died when he was a tot. Wesley never learned to stand up for himself, and his girlfriend, boss, and best buddy all take advantage until the seductive Fox (Angelina Jolie) rescues him from a sharpshooter named Cross (The Pianist's Thomas Kretschmann). After which, she whisks him away to a mansion on the edge of town to meet the other members of the Fraternity, where leader Sloan (Morgan Freeman) informs Wesley that Cross, a rogue agent, executed his father. Sloan believes Wesley has the goods to take him out, so he undergoes the Fraternity's brutal training regimen (Marc Warren and Common dish up some of the abuse). When he's ready, Sloan sends him out to fulfill his duty, but matters become complicated when Wesley finds out someone isn't telling the truth, leading our former milquetoast to exact an elaborate revenge. For those who've been following McAvoy's career to date, Wanted will surely come as a surprise. In adapting Mark Millar's comic series, Timur offers buckets of blood and a smidgen of depth, but fans of The Matrix and Mr. and Mrs. Smith will want to give this one a look. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Disgusting February 5, 2010 Patricia Stout (Lake Ariel, PA, USA) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
This was the biggest disappointment and a total waste of money. Foul language, sex, weird story line, I found it to be disgusting. The one plus I could give it would be that the graphics are fascinating.
Mindless fun January 31, 2010 magellan (Santa Clara, CA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
By the end of the movie I was wondering if this was based on one of Mark Millar's graphic novel ideas, and sure enough, it was in the credits. The movie has garnered a fair number of negative reviews, but this film about an ancient guild of super assassins does have its moments, although for its material it basically rips off just about every recent action thriller you can think of, from The Matrix to Star Wars. Still, how many truly original movies are there? A movie's success basically depends on how well it does with its already usually shopworn themes and ideas, anyway. But I digress; more specifically, the action sequences here reminded me of the spectacular gun-play in the movie, Desperado, starring Antonio Banderas and Joachim Almeida from the early 90s, if I remember right. The idea of a guild of ancient weaver-assassin's is also cool. The interior scenes of the mill with its great looms were also well done.
There's certainly a lot of action, and the train wreck scene on the bridge is one of the best action sequences I think I've ever seen in a movie. The cast is excellent between Morgan Freeman and Angelina Jolie, although I was less familiar with the male lead, which is why I don't recall his name here, but anyway, he did a good job too.
Some of the ideas are wildly fantastic, but fun anyway, such as the special loom and the finely woven cloth with its knots that can be deciphered to name their next victim like a binary code. There's a diverse cast of characters, and the training scenes where they convert the protagonist from a meek accountant to a trained killer are entertaining, although again, pretty fanciful stuff, the most incredible thing being the idea that these super assassins have some psychokinetic powers that allow them to bend bullet trajectories around obstacles and corners. He gets trained in both gun and knife tactics. The knife fighting scenes reminded me of the scenes in the movie Dune between Gurney Halleck and Paul Atreides.
Anyway, not a great flick but not as bad as the negative reviews here say; maybe those are from the fans of the graphic novel who didn't like how it turned out, but I haven't read them yet to find out, but I will.
You've got to be kidding.... January 11, 2010 Alexander (Hobbytown, USA) 0 out of 6 found this review helpful
This movie is so bad, so utterly dreadful, I really don't know where to begin.
Instead, I'll put as much effort into this reveiw as those responsible for this abortion put into it (i.e., about two minutes of cognitive thought).
The script earns an F-, the acting just an F. Production F, editing F, special effects D-, entertainment value F. Overall, F.
Worst picture of all time, I walked out - if this is what passess for entertainment nowadays, I don't "want" any part of it.
Violent as HECK! January 10, 2010 K. Reddick (Phoenix, Arizona) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
OMG!!!! This is an awesome movie! I have to tell you to make this purchase. There is action from the beginning to the end. You can't go to the restroom or for snacks while it is on. I have never in my entire life watched a movie that made me squirm soooo much. Whew! The stunts are off the chain! Wow!
Blast it out of the park action January 3, 2010 Vamsi (Richmond, VA United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I'm an action movie lover. Not all of them make the cut though. Wanted is one movie which doesn't make any pretensions of being a classic movie. Not that there isn't any story line or drama, but it takes second place to the action. And I loved every bit of it. Right to the point of the silly twisting bullets. From the trailers I knew that these scenes were in the movie, so no shock of thinking logic with that. The action scenes deliver, particularly one memorable sequence of a train chase in Romania. I get the chills just thinking about it. Couple it with the high energy score and this movie doesn't disappoint. With a decent receiver, the blu-ray experience delivers with the audio. One interesting point I noticed was when I originally played this movie with a sony sound-bar HDMI audio is that exactly at 13:48 seconds into the movie, it froze. I was able to play Kung-fu Panda with the same sound-bar though, so its peculiar to this disc only. I don't have that issue anymore as I promptly returned it next day for an Onkyo SR606 receiver.
