This prequel to Len Wiseman’s Underworld and Underworld: Evolution is distinctively different, especially minus the nimble vampire warrior star, Selene (Kate Beckinsale). Underworld: Rise of the Lycans takes its cues from the vampire/werewolf battles that occur in the other films, but director Patrick Tatopoulos focuses here on the young werewolf Lucian's (Michael Sheen) rise to leadership. Rise of the Lycans is set mostly within the walls of vampire lord Viktor’s (Bill Nighy) castle, so the film’s silver, black, and blue palette reflects a world happening under moonlight. From the outset, when Viktor brings Lucian, the first werewolf, into the world, this villainous bloodsucker’s daughter, Sonja (Rhona Mitra), is smitten with Lucian’s hairy appearance and instinctual intelligence. As years pass, Lucian grows tired of watching his race suffer slavery and imprisonment, and recruits a human named Raze (Kevin Grevioux) to assist rebellion. This archetypal plot is not so riveting, and what carries Underworld: Rise of the Lycans are the battle scenes between vampires and werewolves, which are excitingly fast-paced and brutal. The whole film adopts a medieval battlefield aesthetic that carries an otherwise clichéd story about illicit love and freedom fighting. Some characters, like the traitor vampire Tannis (Steven Mackintosh), also intrigues throughout, as one guesses who he will ally with. Underworld: Rise of the Lycans may not be the finest film in the werewolf and vampire archives independently, but its mixed monstrosity makes it unique and entertaining, especially on a big screen. --Trinie Dalton

4 out of 5 stars Very Good Prequal To Underworld - Recommended!   March 14, 2010
CFH (Blue Ridge Summit, PA USA)
"Underworld: Rise of the Lycans" is a prequal to the excellent Underworld (Widescreen Special Edition).

No plot spoilers from me; this follows the story line show in "Underworld" where the werewolf slave Lucian (Michael Sheen) has a forbidden relationship with the vampire coven leader's (Viktor, again played by Bill Nighy) daughter, Sonja (Rhona Mitra). There are a few interesting subplots, including how Lucian becomes the leader of the lycans and the origin of one of the more memorable werewolves from the first movie.

The cinematography is excellent, making the mood of the movie very "Gothic" and is very much reminiscent of "Underworld". The action is much more intense and the special effects are even better this time.

Once again, some liberties were taken with the vampire and werewolf mythologies but nothing too far out of bounds. Like the first movie, my only real complaint is that the average vampire is portrayed as far too weak compared to the werewolves.

Fans of the original movie, like me, will likely enjoy this one as well.

1 out of 5 stars Privileged girl / slave boy romance with a vampire / werewolf backdrop   March 10, 2010
Geoffrey Johnson (Lake Villa, IL United States)
This movie is your classic, privileged girl that loves a slave boy and defies her father, and her people with their forbidden romance. It seems like this story has been told dozens of times in the past, only this time the privileged girl is a vampire and the slave boy is a werewolf lycan. There is big budget action sprinkled in throughout the movie. The art style really sets it apart from any other movie, because its dark, blue and set in the medieval ages. The movie is devoid of life and good acting, but I guess when they're vampires they have to be devoid of life. It's a chore to watch, but if you love werewolf versus vampire action with swords instead of guns, then this movie is for you!

The DVD is in great condition. There are no scratches on it at all. I got it fairly quickly in the mail. Also the box didn't have any damage it on it as well. The movie was good. All in all I'm very pleased with my purchase.

I love the Underworld Movies Trilogy, specially the first one and this one (not so much the second). In this movie we see how Lucius and the werewolves were created and what happen before the first movie (yes, it's a prequel). If you are a true fan, you are going to love this one, it's a keeper!
