Amazon.com You'd have thought that Nora Ephron and Mike Nichols had remade Heaven's Gate: that was the critical reaction to this film version of Ephron's semiautobiographical novel about her own marital woes. The fact that they had Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep playing thinly disguised versions of Carl Bernstein and Ephron probably made them bigger, fatter targets. In fact, the film was a genuinely funny and painful look at the effects of marital infidelity and divorce, in the story of two married writers and what happens when the pregnant wife finds out the husband has been fooling around behind her back. The film is more dramatic and less quip-filled than Ephron's novel, which made the Ephron character a food writer and was peppered with recipes. Nicholson stepped into his role at the last minute, when Nichols fired Mandy Patinkin for being too intense and not funny enough. --Marshall Fine

Heart Burn February 6, 2010 LadyAyn (Texas) It's an okay movie -- not what I had hoped for from two such talented actors.
Heartburn June 4, 2009 John F. Donahoe (Farmington, Ct United States) I enjoy an extensive list of dvd's. I rate "Heartburn" in the top 5 of my favorites. In a word, this movie is EXCELLENT. It will be viewed by me again and again. The performance of the little girl singing towards the end, and Streep's command of this scene, is absolutely brilliant.

The Best April 11, 2009 M. Donald Kincaid (Houston, Texas USA) This is a movie I can watch over and over and still get a great pleasure in seeing like new each time. The irony, the sarcasm, the joy, the anger or relationships is all there by two of the best actors in the business - Meryl Streep and Jack Nicholson. Truely a place we have all been at some time with a relationship, Ms. Ephron's book is carried out without apology as the characters go through all the phases of love and despair. And watch for the a very young Kevin Spacey as a punked-out robber.
Still stinks, plus it's pointless March 28, 2009 Bradley F. Smith (Miami Beach, FL) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Other than as Nora Ephron's vengeance against the philandering Carl Bernstein, this movie makes absolutely no sense. There is no plot, per se. They get married, he cheats, they break up. So? If this is supposed to be a comedy, it's not funny. Nicholson is wasted, and so is Meryl Streep. Critics savaged this when it came out. They were correct.

Heart Burn
Streep and Nicolson did a great job teaming up for this movie. Loved the romance and heartache that so many people experience these days in this story. Very entertaining and is a tear jerker.
