Amazon.com Perhaps the highest compliment you can pay to Edward Norton is that his Oscar-nominated performance in American History X nearly convinces you that there is a shred of logic in the tenets of white supremacy. If that statement doesn't horrify you, it should; Norton is so fully immersed in his role as a neo-Nazi skinhead that his character's eloquent defense of racism is disturbingly persuasive--at least on the surface. Looking lean and mean with a swastika tattoo and a mind full of hate, Derek Vinyard (Norton) has inherited racism from his father, and that learning has been intensified through his service to Cameron (Stacy Keach), a grown-up thug playing tyrant and teacher to a growing band of disenfranchised teens from Venice Beach, California, all hungry for an ideology that fuels their brooding alienation. The film's basic message--that hate is learned and can be unlearned--is expressed through Derek's kid brother, Danny (Edward Furlong), whose sibling hero-worship increases after Derek is imprisoned (or, in Danny's mind, martyred) for the killing of two black men. Lacking Derek's gift of rebel rhetoric, Danny is easily swayed into the violent, hateful lifestyle that Derek disowns during his thoughtful time in prison. Once released, Derek struggles to save his brother from a violent fate, and American History X partially suffers from a mix of intense emotions, awkward sentiment, and predictably inevitable plotting. And yet British director Tony Kaye (who would later protest against Norton's creative intervention during post-production) manages to juggle these qualities--and a compelling clash of visual styles--to considerable effect. No matter how strained their collaboration may have been, both Kaye and Norton can be proud to have created a film that addresses the issue of racism with dramatically forceful impact. --Jeff Shannon

Edward norton's best movie ever! 5/5 stars March 5, 2010 Anti MTV (peru) The main thing I liked about this movie is that the storyline was top notch, This movie shows us how bad racism can be and how sad it could end to tragedy. Unfortunatly this was the saddest movie I ever seen but it was a great drama flick. I think edward nortons character as a former leader skinhead should show others especially the youth how bad and how wrong it is to hate others by the color of their skin, Sadly racism is still everywhere and I think some people like this movie for the wrong reasons. It's a shame this movie didn't get an award because I think it was the greatist movie ever.
If you like edward norton's movies then look no furhter this movie is for you.
Interesting March 3, 2010 Mark H. Thompson (Seattle, WA) I like this movie, but just for the acting. The whole Nazi theme was a turn off for me. Edward Norton does a great job acting though. I'd say it's his second best compared to Fight Club.
The truth hurts. February 13, 2010 The (CA, USA) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
This movie is great because it hits a spot in your heart, even though I give this movie 5 stars, it can be disturbing to watch in certain scenes. Bluray is awesome, the picture quality is so sharp I can see the actors pores on their skin.
499 people give this movie 5 stars and i see 29 people give it 2 stars or less, made me try and figure out why, and see from other peoples point of view. Yes this movie is stereotypical, but some stereotypes are true, and some are false. Yes not every young white person is racist, duh. And not all black people commit crimes, duh. etc etc etc. Basically this movie has a deep message that we all face, most people have racist and prejudice thoughts, but to different degrees. Some are extreme, some are peaceful and theres people in between. We as human carry this deadly virus that can either consume us, or if we choose, cure ourselves and live a happy enlightening life. But like a virus that hides deep wihtin our body, we need to dig down deep to find ourselves first before we can start fighting back for the good. The message this movie is sending cannot be any clearer. "HATE IS BAGGAGE". So true.
Those people who rated this movie with 2 stars or less have the right to their opinion, but after thinking and pondering, I can only conclude, that they may have some personal issues deep within that they may not want to face, because the truth can hurt you. Just like with anything. Whether you confront and face your fears or the truth, it can set you free. I give this movie 5 stars for 2 reasons, first it does it excellent job entertaining you which is why people watch movies, and secondly, it has a really good message that contributes to improving the quality of life, because after all, white, black, brown, yellow, pink, orange, red, or purple, we are all brothers and sisters one with the universe and until you cannot understand that concept, you will always be a victim of endless suffering caused of your own weakness. "Hate is baggage" what a simple yet profound message this movie emphasizes and reminds those who get caught up in the storm of hatred. Hatred is so powerful, is the what will consume life if we as humans let it, one day there will be no earth left, hatred is the most deadliest, potent, evil, dark, form of energy that can completely take over ones mind and change oneself completely. Hatred is so deadly because people under estimate its power over the mind. Yes most people understand the concept of hate, but once it has captured your mind, it is almost impossible to free yourself from it as your mind becomes saturated with such evil. Whether is is temporary or chronic, it can destroy lives in a second, or for thousands of years. "Hate is baggage", why do you want to carry baggage when you dont need it? I know that personally, I hate carrying baggage whether it weighs 2 lbs. or 50 lbs or 100 lbs. Just throw it away in the trash.
great movie February 1, 2010 Thomas P. Helsel 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This movie is a little intense with racism but that is the point of it. Edward Norton and Edward Furlong give a stellar performance and I love to watch this movie. It is definitely worth the 8 dollars I paid for it.
Brutally Brilliant January 4, 2010 S.Papstein (Eureka CA) Going into American History X, I knew two things about the movie: 1) it was about neo nazi's 2)Edward Norton was suppose to keep constant with being an amazing actor. Apon viewing History, I left with knowing three things: 1)The writing and direction are bar none 2) Edward Norton is still a phenominal actor and 3)American History X is one helluva film.
Nazi's are characters which aren't too common in American film. Outside of being plastered by an All American protagonist assult rifle, (or by the Bear Jew's bat) Nazi's are untouched by the cinema. Never before has anyone tried to take a Nazi, a modern day Nazi at that, and turn him into a heroic character. American History X uses this as it's main hook. Edward Norton plays a reformed Neo-Nazi in Venice Beach. After being incarcerated for 3 years in prision, Derek Vinyard (Norton) looks to reform his life and save his brother from the gang life that he lead. Norton's acting in the late 90's was that of legends. AHX catipultes him on a podium of acting that is untouched by the hords of modern day preformers. His acting talents have leaked into other flicks, but with History X and Fight Club, Norton was in rare form, catipulting two revolutionary films even further.
Thematically, American History gives a good amount of social commentary where the message is prevelant, but you aren't bashed over the head. Touching on a theme that Unforgiven gave, direcotr Tony Kaye asks us, can forgiveness be an option to a person with such a terrible history? Mixing themes of race, gang life, and redemption, American History message is left blatently open, but is strong and powerful.
American History X blew me away. I intially thought X would showcase the downfall of a man with no morals. Instead, I was introduced to a cast of mentally complex characters that grow and evolve. As brutal as it is brilliant, AHX is rated R for good reason. Graphic violence, rape and language is used liberally. It packs as big a punch with adult material is it does with it's message. On the last note, Hollywood once agian takes its stabs at Republicans (although Vinyard is right winged Naxi, he has very educated political opinions), dissapointing me, the "close minded conservative". Regardless, History X is a great film that derserves to be viewed.
