Product Description In this remake and updated version of the 1965 THUNDERBALL, James Bond, who has been primarily teaching for the last few years, is quite happily yanked out of semiretirement to deal with the deadly SPECTRE organization's newest plan for the destruction of the planet. (The Bond story line mimics Sean Connery's semiretirement from the role, which he had last played in 1971's DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER.) Agent Number 2, also known as Maximilian Largo (Klaus Maria Brandauer), has managed to steal two cruise missiles armed with nuclear warheads, and Agent Number 1, Blofeld (Max von Sydow), has threatened to explode them in areas with large populations if a huge, and almost impossible, ransom demand from the NATO countries is not met. The film features an excellent gaming battle between Largo and Bond, as well as stunning turns by Barbara Carrera and Kim Basinger.
Amazon.com After years of enduring Roger Moore in the role of James Bond, it was good to have Sean Connery back in this 1983 film for a one-time-only trip down 007's memory lane. Connery's Bond, a bit of a dinosaur in the British secret service at (then) 52, is still in demand during times of crisis. Sadly, the film is not very good. In this rehash of Thunderball, Bond is pitted against a worthy underwater villain (Klaus Maria Brandauer); and while the requisite Bond Girls include beauties Kim Basinger and Barbara Carrera, they can't save the movie. The script has several truly dumb passages, among them a (gasp) video-game duel between 007 and his nemesis that now looks utterly anachronistic. For Connery fans, however, this widescreen print of the Irvin Kershner (The Empire Strikes Back) film is a chance to say a final goodbye to a perfect marriage of actor and character. --Tom Keogh

NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN January 23, 2010 Robert J. Szvetics 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
Why did they put this aweful remake of THUNDERBALL on BLU-RAY when YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE and DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER havent been released yet on BLU-RAY who runs this video company JEFF ZUCKER.
A really fun unofficial Bond movie January 15, 2010 M. Herzog (chicago) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I've always like Never Say Never Again, though I acknowledge its flaws. I liked that the movie doesn't take itself too seriously, and prefer that Bonds age was embraced rather than ignored. I liked the way the movie poked fun at the conventions of a bond movie while using them, and frankly loved seeing connery as bond again. While I won't pretend it was the trendsetter of goldfinger or thunderball (of which it was based), I was far more entertained with it than You only live twice. A very good movie.
With the blu ray I wanted to point out that it looks vastly superior to the original released dvd, yet doesn't shine the way modern Blu-ray movies do, not that it is expected. I also rather enjoyed the special features, though wish sean connery himself was interviewed. Overall, I can't imagine a better way to enjoy this movie, and if your a bond fan at all, it should be in your collection. Recomended.
Good quality January 4, 2010 Toby J. Hendrix (STL, Mo) Good quality. It matches well with the 3 box sets I have of all the other bond movies. I'm glad it was made, but sad it wasnt put in the box sets. I understand why....but whatever. Still good stuff.
It's great to see the Original Actor... December 30, 2009 T. Coleman 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
do it just one last time with class when Moore portrayed a buffoon in the same year. It's great to get a beautiful transfer of the movie that will last beyond my life to boot!
The worst of the best. November 19, 2009 E. M. Van Court (Honolulu, Hawai'i, USA) The James Bond movies constitute one of the greatest movie franchises in history. This is the worst of the entire series. This being said, it is still pretty good. Sean Connery was at an all time low between his fit and smart-aleck youth and his suave, poised maturity. The script was lifted from Thunderball. The gimicks and gadgets weren't terribly creative.
Still, it moves at a good pace, the jokes are OK, the villians are fairly sinister, Kim Basinger gives a passable performance, and if you're not comparing it to other Bond films, it is pretty good.
Even at its worst, Bond is still better than most.
E. M. Van Court
