Riding the strange '50s nostalgia wave that swept through America during the late 1970s (caused by TV shows like Happy Days and films like American Graffiti), Grease became not only the word in 1978, but also a box-office smash and a cultural phenomenon. Twenty years later, this entertaining film adaptation of the Broadway musical received another successful theatrical release, which included visual remastering and a shiny new Dolby soundtrack. For its video and laser disc re-release, Grease lovers can also now see it in the correct 2:35 to 1 Panavision aspect ratio, and see retrospective interviews with cast members and director Randal Kleiser. All these stylistic touches are essential to the film's success. Without the fabulously choreographed, widescreen musical numbers; vibrant colors; and unforgettably campy and catchy tunes (like "Greased Lightning," "Summer Nights," and "You're the One That I Want"), the film would have to rely on a silly, cliché-filled plot that we've seen hundreds of times. As it is, the episodic story about the romantic dilemmas experienced by a group of graduating high school seniors remains fresh, fun, and incredibly imaginative. The young, animated cast also deserves a lot of credit, bringing chemistry and energy to otherwise bland material. John Travolta, straight from his success in Saturday Night Fever, knows his sexual star power and struts, swaggers, sings, and dances appropriately; while Olivia Newton-John's portrayal of virgin innocence is the only decent acting she's ever done. And then there's Stockard Channing, spouting sexual double-entendres as Rizzo, the bitchy, raunchy leader of the Pink Ladies, who steals the film from both of its stars. Sandy Olsen is a goody two shoes from Austrailia, Danny Zuko is the head T-Bird from Rydell High. However when the two meet up during the summer, they fall in love. But when the summer ends, the two think they'll never see each other again. However they're both wrong, Sandy and her parents have moved to America and she is now attending Danny's school. When the two discover that they attend the same school, there is a lot of debate over whether they can still be together since it's uncool for Danny to be in love with a goody goody like Sandy. However the two, against all odds, manage to stay together. Then graduation comes and Sandy is about to change in a way no one expected. The vocals in this movie are outstanding, with the breath-taking voice of Olivia Newton-John, and John Travolta's rock numbers. It's a timeless hit that will have people enjoying it throughout the ages.

BLU-RAY VERSION IS WORTH BUYING. I DON'T NEED TO TELL YOU ABOUT THE MOVIE, OTHERS ALREADY HAVE. BUT, NOT TOO MANY PEOPLE TELL YOU IF IT IS WORTH UPGRADING FROM YOUR REGULAR DVD TO BLU-RAY. THIS ONE IS WORTH IT. COLORS ARE STUNNING AND SOUNDS GREAT.
Big Transfer improvement over last one in 2002 January 12, 2010

Ive been a fan of this film since it came out back in 1978. Its odd but its like the 70's version of the Wizard of Oz. It appeals to all age groups and backgrounds.
I dont know anyone who actually sat down and watched the film from start to finish who didnt like it.
My first copy was on CED, the old RCA disc system from the early 80's that died within about 5 years. It still plays by the way and the colors really popped on that transfer. Next was on laserdisc, the Pioneer disc system that lasted into the mid 90's. That copy was ok, but not as a good as the CED. Both of those transfers were cropped.
Since DVD came along this is by far the best transfer! The picture is smooth and the grain is gone thankfully. The colors pop and the image is sharp. I have a Sony lcd projection tv and Sony dvd player. Ive not jumped into bluray yet if I ever do.
Its taken about 30 years for a home copy of this movie to come along that has a decent transfer of the original film!

Love the '50's music - especially seeing Sha Na Na at their best. The only complaint I have with the movie is the suggestive language - but that is to be expected with that group of teens. It is not enough to make me never watch again, but why I give it a 4 star rating.
Olivia Newton John's voice is lovely and I love "Hopelessly Devoted to You". John Travolta can do no wrong!
Kudos for Casting to include some of the stars from the 1950's. That is a wonderful bonus.

It's a timeless musical that's loved by all, and the extras take you to another level. The full screen made it more enjoyable for me to watch.
