| Customer Reviews: Better than some would have you believe February 4, 2010 Movie Fan (Oxford, UK) I delayed purchasing this title on Blu-ray for two reasons - waiting to see if it would be released in the UK as a region B or region free issue and concern about the many reviews criticising the video and sound quality.
In the end, I gave up waiting for a UK release and chose to ignore the negative reviews and judge for myself.
All I can say is that both video and sound quality are very good. I can only assume that those who criticise this Blu-ray title either have deficiencies with their home cinema equipment or have very unrealistic expectations.
Using a Pioneer BDP-LX71 Blu-ray player connected to a Pioneer PDP-LX5090 50 inch 1080p plasma the picture is sharp, with excellent black depth and detail. Grain was very rarely visible and the whole transfer is impressive when compared to the DVD release which I also have. It's widescreen too. The picture is more grainy than some of the best Blu-ray releases when paused however.
With the HD soundtrack playing through a Dali Helicon 5 channel speaker set-up via Primare electronics, I never thought it was anything other than excellent. I never noticed the problem of unclear voices reported by some others.
Another notable plus is the packaging. The five discs, all of which are easily individually accessible, are accommodated within a standard size and thickness Blu-ray case. Why can't all box sets be packaged this way?
The one big negative is the advertisement for the Star Trek Blu-ray release at the start of the first disc - this appears to disable all player transport functions to defeat any attempt to skip or fast forward through it. Extremely annoying!
AND.....WHY IS IT REGION CODED AND NOT REGION FREE???? I WOULD LOVE TO KNOW THE JUSTIFICATION.

Please can anyone owning this title tell me if there are also English subtitles included in this blu-ray edition?
Thanks, R o n
Update 09/08/2009: I learned from an other reviewer that indeed there are English subtitles included. Given the fact that some people already complaint about relatively soft conversations, more people may benefit from turning on English subtitles.
The Father of All CSI Series... June 14, 2009 zer0ne (Singapore) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
CSI is my favorite crime show of all times after NYPD Blues.
The episodes are 3-digit coded and are list in order except for episode 103 that reside on disc 3, between episode 110 and 111.
Video: 4/5
Clean and crisp video. First time on 16:9 view format. Lose a star due to 1080i as Bluray main feature usually in 1080p.
Audio: 4/5
Part of the vocals are soft while music and sound effects are loud and clear. Sometimes need to adjust the volume to hear the conversation.
Extras: 2.5/5
Only disc 1 & 5 have Special Features, and the most of them are on disc 5. Love the packaging. Slim and space saving.
Overall: 4/5
Excellent quality transfer of a worthy series June 9, 2009 Peggy L. Wilkins (Chicago, IL USA) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I have enjoyed CSI for many years, and I have been grateful to CBS/Chicago for their continuing high quality HD broadcasts which do justice to this beautifully filmed series. While other networks have opted to compress their HD broadcasts to push multiple channels of content through their allotted bandwidth, CBS is committed to quality -- and as a viewer who wants high visual quality, I for one appreciate it.
This Blu-ray transfer more than lives up to the CBS broadcast quality level. Frankly it looks better than broadcast can deliver. There is virtually no observable compression in the video transfer. My player shows bit rates of 30-35 Mbps at times -- a bit rate unmatched by most other transfers I have seen. Sometimes film grain is very evident, but given the low light conditions of some of the original scenes that is to be expected. It accurately renders the source material.
Visually, this product delivers exactly what I want in HD.
1 Star for Horrible Video Quality May 16, 2009 Meghan (Seattle, WA) 12 out of 23 found this review helpful
Being a long-time CSI fan, I was really looking forward to owning the first season in wide-screen format on Blu-ray. Unfortunately, this set does not come close to meeting my expectations.
This release has the worst video quality I have ever seen on Blu-ray. Even allowing for the age of the show, the picture is overly grainy, with dirty spots, and the color is over-saturated and has a strange orange tint. This set feels like the studio planned a Blu-ray release, realized they didn't have the quality they needed from the original film, and just kept processing it anyway so they could cash in on the Blu-ray hype.
Not-so-bonus: Disc 1 contains a 2-3 minute advertisement for the upcoming Star Trek Blu-ray set that cannot be skipped or fast-forwarded through.
