Amazon.com essential video Clint Eastwood (the Man with No Name) is good, Lee Van Cleef (Angel Eyes Sentenza) is bad, and Eli Wallach (Tuco Benedito Pacifico Juan Maria Ramirez) is ugly in the final chapter of Sergio Leone's trilogy of spaghetti westerns (the first two were A Fistful of Dollars and For a Few Dollars More). In this sweeping film, the characters form treacherous alliances in a ruthless quest for Confederate gold. Leone is sometimes underrated as a director, but the excellent resolution on this digital video disc should enhance appreciation of his considerable photographic talent and gorgeous widescreen compositions. Ennio Morricone's jokey score is justifiably famous.

Just Good February 3, 2010 schimmel1885 (Yellow Springs, OH USA) I had gotten this DVD version from the local library. I liked it so much that I ordered a copy as a gift for someone else.
Spaghetti Western as Greek Tragedy January 29, 2010 Zarathustra (Sacramento, CA USA) Sergio Leone's The Good, the Bad and the Ugly from 1966 is the final movie in The Man With No Name trilogy featuring Clint Eastwood. This spaghetti western filmed in Spain with mostly Italian actors is so spare that it is almost a silent film. In fact, it plays like a Greek tragedy. The 2005 special edition runs three hours. IMDb rates it as 9.0 and #4 of the 250 best movies of all time.
It is easy to spot the flaws in the movie from the very beginning. The scenery and buildings do not look at all like the American West. Most of the actors' voices are dubbed. The highly praised soundtrack by Ennio Morricone is incredibly repetitive.
This film is all skin and bones and no meat. The Greatest Western Of All Time has to be Judge Roy Hill's Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid from 1969. It has great acting, humor, an excellent score and beautiful scenery. Hey, it even goes to Bolivia.
Good classic. January 29, 2010 Retro Film Fan (Houston) The blu-ray version of this classic spaghetti western looks and sounds great for such an old movie. There is an improvement over the regular DVD version, but of course it will pale beside today's modern, eye-popping films. The disc is definitely worth the price paid for anyone that is a fan of this genre.
New Life for a Great Film January 27, 2010 B. Browne Finally, a decently produced version of what is arguably the greatest western ever made! I discarded the VHS version of this film when the first DVD appeared, and like other reviewers, was disappointed at the audio and video quality of the early DVD. This latest version more than makes up for previous format inadequacies. The film is crystal clear; the audio does total justice to Ennio Morricone's magnificent soundtrack and the action in the film. If you are a fan of this film, do not hesitate to acquire this wondrous version.
