Dollhouse is GREAT STORY TELLING! Do not miss this jewel! February 9, 2010 Born in a Library (California) Do you want great stories? Watch DOLLHOUSE.
Do you want great acting? Watch DOLLHOUSE.
Do you want to be entertained, engrossed and have your "little gray brain cells" activated? WATCH DOLLHOUSE.
Good vs. Evil.
What is Love?
What does it mean to be Human?
Is a person more than the biological casing, our bodies wrapped around our brains?
Week after week, this series asks all these great questions and in the stories, the viewer is taken on a ride that is full of surprises and totally captivating adventures.
The premise is intoxicating. Science has advanced to such a degree that the brain can be mapped and digitized so that the you that is you can be extracted and put into computer disks and transfered into another person's body. "You can live forever, you can use up a human body and just get transfered into a new body over and over again! YOU CAN LIVE FOREVER!"
The creepiness of such power and the ugly flip side of tampering with humanity and the brain are also explored in this series.
Eliza Dushku is amazing. All of the actors are amazing. The scenes where the different "actives" take on each other's "persons" showcase the actor's skills. When VICTOR becomes TOPHER, you hear and watch the brawny VICTOR become the computer geek and the computer geek becomes the brawny former commando. Great acting! Great fun!
The different characters in DOLLHOUSE are not stereotypical in anyway. You wonder what Olivia Williams character did before she took over as the head of the Los Angeles branch of the DOLLHOUSE. You wonder why FBI agent Paul becomes so obsessed with investigating the rumors of the existence of the DOLLHOUSE to risk his career. You have never seen such characters before. Not just another sitcom or network TV character recycled over and over again.
Can't wait for season 2 on DVD.
One of the best TV-on-Blu-Ray sets ever January 31, 2010 DVD buff (Austin, TX USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
First, let's talk about DOLLHOUSE. Brilliant concept for a show -- a lead character who gets to be a different person each week. A dream job for an actor. Eliza Dushku pulls it off stunningly well. She's also surrounded by a fantastic ensemble, especially Tahmoh Penikett, Fran Kranz and Olivia Williams. Admittedly, the show starts out a bit weak, but it definitely improves as the episodes progress.
The problem with DOLLHOUSE? Fox has no faith in it. They put it on Friday nights from the start, which is where networks put shows that they're trying to kill. No one watches TV on Fridays, apparently. It's the death slot for a program. The bigger problem with DOLLHOUSE? You have to have an IQ of at least 135 to begin to understand it. When you read complaints about it, you'll notice that the people complaining just don't seem to get it -- they're not smart enough to follow the complexities of the writing. This is a deep, convoluted show that requires you to put some effort into viewing it. You can't sit passively back and enjoy it like an episode of THE KING OF QUEENS. A brain is required.
Now, about the Blu-Ray set. It's as good as it gets. Not one, but TWO unaired episodes: an unaired pilot episode that gives you some good insight into the show's origins, and an episode unrelated to the rest of season 1 titled EPITAPH 1. This is a story set in the future, showing the mostly-destroyed world as the Dollhouse technology has left it. Fox didn't show this episode, but it's fascinating nonetheless. You rarely get "bonus materials" so good on a DVD set. Plus, the picture, sound and extras are all top-notch.
If you're a fan of TV that makes you think, I highly recommend you pick up both this season and the second season (when it comes out). Unlike many shows that are cancelled too soon, DOLLHOUSE gets a pretty satisfying conclusion at the end of the second season. I think this is a show that will be talked about for years to come (much like Whedon's previous show FIREFLY).
Excellent January 30, 2010 Jessica M. Johnson (NY, USA) If you liked Buffy the Vampire Slayer, you'll love this show! Joss is amazing!
A waste of talent of Eliza Dushku January 29, 2010 Wolverines fan 1 out of 6 found this review helpful
Always a big fan of Eliza Dushku since first saw her in Buffy, the Vampire Slayer playing the opposite of Buffy as "Faith", the bad girl, a%* kicking Slayer. She's still as adorable, and attractive as ever, even in Tru Calling. But this DollHouse, the rest of the casting was weak, story doesn't make any sense, is just average from one episode to the next. Plain bad acting. First episode needed to be one of the best, if not the best, if it wants to win the audience over. That Topher computer geek guy ruins the show, is so annoying, and has alot of similarities with Xander in Buffy, but worse. Still can't pass the 1st disc, so boring. Now go back and watch Tru Calling, and Buffy with Eliza as " Faith". Those two shows were good. Too bad Tru Calling got canceled early.
Worth every penny... January 25, 2010 Ms. Patricia J. Adams (California) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Once in a great while do you find a Gem like this show... worth every penny it cost to own on Blue Ray... The story is compelling, with a painful tinge of Machiavelli (did I spell that right). So easy it was to find myself going along for the ride... and seeing the world of 2019 depicted in Epitaph One, it was very easy to believe that the Filthy Rich and Powerful would choose to steal young bodies in their continuing explorations of selfish and profane pursuits! Is this the real truth behind the series' cancellation? That this story hits the power elite too close to home? - Be careful Joss, soon they won't let you tell your stories anymore...
