4 out of 5 stars Eventually Rather Absorbing   March 20, 2010
    Celia Hayes (San Antonio, SA)
Having never been a particular Joss Whedan fan, (although I rather liked the `old west in space' concept of Firefly and watched it in reruns with mind enjoyment) and managing to escape any awareness about The Dollhouse at all - I was able to watch it on its own merits, and pretty much without preconceptions. At least, there was a new concept there, not something that has been done, repeatedly every season and by every channel in every possible permutation since about the late 1960s or so. So mad props for an original, if rather creepy premise, of which just enough hinted at to intrigue the viewer, and not so much revealed that they can begin to pick holes in the very possibility that somewhere in Los Angeles is a secret enterprise which provides personalities to order for the very, very rich and connected, for whatever mission and purpose is required. Somehow, it has become feasible to assemble a personality and a specific skill-set, and download them into a living human being - and then just as casually erase it all, when the mission is accomplished.

In between their assignments, a handful of operatives, or `dolls' live in pampered luxury, their personalities and intellects on the level of about a well-mannered four-year old. They are overseen by their guardian handlers, a mysterious executive-level manager with a chipped-glass English accent, and a matched set of doctors - a woman with a mysterious facial scar, and a brilliant but socially inept technician who appears to know everything in the world about how to load human soft-wear into the human brain. Added to that is the driven FBI agent, searching for a one of the `dollhouse' inhabitants, circling Javert-like in the mean streets and offices ... and there you might think is the series: kind of a Mission Impossible, but with new minds downloaded into the same old bodies, and the same-old-same-old plot, week in and week out. But along about the fifth episode, the story arc begins to kick in noticeably, and the viewer observes the odd coincidences, the unexpected twists and turns, and the fact that most of the on-going characters are actually rather complicated and intriguing personalities, the sense that there is something more going on than just what is necessary to keep the plot-o-the-week turning. One of the things which struck me, is that the actors playing the handful of `dolls' must absolutely relish the chance to be a radical new character, each time they are sent out. They have completely different mannerisms, turns of speech and skills, each time; as if they are reacting to a world of color, from the bland black and white inside the `Dollhouse'.

5 out of 5 stars The FREAKIN Idiots killed off The Dollhouse..   March 19, 2010
    Edward Davidson (AUSTRALIA)

Here we go again just as a show gets into its stride some brainless idiot in a suite and a big office kills it off.. Eliza Dushku (my fav actress) is absoloutly brilliant as the lead doll - ECHO... But like "Tru Calling" Eliza is set for a short spin and a quick kill off.. What is up with these idiots in the top office are they totaly brain dead or to full of the company Scotch WHISKY..??.. How did they get to the top tree..??.... How come they keep killing off Eliza's shows and insist on stuffing so called Reality Crap down our throats...
Useing Epitath one as the "kill off" sealed the fate of Dollhouse... Joss should not have let that one out of the bag till the very bitter end... OR maybe thats what he thought it was.. The end of the Dollhouse... When the little girl climed out of the Doll house on the rope (with Carolines memory) it should have opened up a whole row of doors (like Angle did for Buffy)... Instead it was used as a kill - off... FLANNEL FREAKIN FOOLS.. (i hope your reading this)..
I have just seen a couple of season 2 episodes here in Ozz knowing that the show has been nailed before season 2 even finished... Brilliant AGAIN.. Especially the episode of Sieara and her rapeing doctor... Buttt... Epitath One (a never to be forgoten episode) is now always in the back of my mind... Maybe Epitath one should have gone for two hours showing more of what happened to ECHO and the crew after they armed up for the big fight they had help create outside the DOLLHOUSE..
Remember Buffy.. They were going to kill her off in Season one I believe untill everyone screamed loud and long... Maybe we could all do that again.. Then how long did Buffy go.. A hell of a lot of series, then with Angel as a spin - off...
Till Doll house is resumed it will be back to a good book as I sure ain't going to watch such absolute CRAP and so called REALITY RUBBISH as Survivor, Criss Angle And Fear factor that the channels are dishing up... GOD HELP AND SAVE US FROM CORPERATE IDIOT CLOWNS AND BRING BACK ELIZA, CAST, CREW and DOLLHOUSE...(or it's spin-off)..

5 out of 5 stars I'm kind of a Joss bobo, so what would you expect   March 19, 2010

Liked this a lot. Better than I remember. I'm very glad this has the pilot on it. I think the pilot was stronger than the actual beginning of the series. Also, I remembered the rape arc introduced in episodes 6, 7 and 8 overshadowing the whole of the last season. But, after watching them on BD, I think that it must have just been the "previously on..." segments when they aired that created that aura. Because I felt like it happened and the series moved on, instead of staying mired in it like I did when watching the original airings. Eh. Maybe it was just me. G

3 out of 5 stars Promises the Moon   March 15, 2010
    Kevin L. Nenstiel (Kearney, Nebraska)
1 out of 2 found this review helpful

I bet this is the kind of show actors thumb-wrestle their agents to get into: a chance to play a different role in every episode. Subtle writing, lurking secrets, and explosive action make even jaded viewers like me hang on. I only wish the performances were on par with the background. Then this merely good show could be great.

Deep beneath Los Angeles, a shadowy organization uses advanced tech to reprogram human beings into whatever they need to be. Working at once to evade the law and to get immensely rich, the Dollhouse promises the moon to anybody who can afford to pay. What they can't promise is that they can control the implications.

Series principal Eliza Dushku is an odd choice on which to hang an action drama. The role was created for her, and it plays to her strengths, letting her be essentially vacant as the camera longingly admires her body and her fighting chops. The show operates at its peak when the camera turns its gaze on the other actors.

And what a supporting cast. Harry Lennix, Olivia Williams, and Tamoh Penikett lead an ensemble through the kind of paces that must make Equity lawyers see dollar signs, from action to romance to comedy and back. They are capable of so much, but the camera so loves Dushku that they get far too little face time.

The story benefits from Joss Whedon's distinctive humor and eye for an off-kilter story. But not every actor is up to Whedon's particular demands. Fran Krantz in particular wants to overplay the humor, and winds up mugging for the camera, while Miracle Laurie, so good in the dramatic and romantic scenes, sucks laughter away like a comedy Hoover.

Moreover, the show's political implication, that technology's force panders to human weakness, is good but overplayed. At various points, different characters state the series thesis explicitly, apparently because the creators think we're too thick to put the pieces together. Considering how subtle the story is, the moral should be equally restrained.

This show will likely be remembered as one of TV's great "Almost-Was" moments. Like Whedon's other lost classic, Firefly, people will talk about it in wishful tones, mourning all the missed potential. I enjoy the show's smart intensity, but it should be so much better than it ultimately proves to be.

4 out of 5 stars Should have had time to build   March 3, 2010

Dollhouse was far better than Fox's treatment of the show would have indicated (remember Firefly?). I'm just glad they had a second season to tie up the story line. The quality of the Blu-ray image is superb.
