In the fourth and reportedly final film of the Lethal Weapon series, director Richard Donner reunites with Mel Gibson and Danny Glover, who reprise their roles as Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh for one last hurrah in a film that is decidedly better than the third and first chapters. This time the pair are pitted against Jet Li, who plays the leader of a Chinese organized crime unit. Li, a veteran of hundreds of Hong Kong action films, more than holds his own against the more established team of Gibson, Glover, Renee Russo, and Joe Pesci with his subtle yet strong portrayal of the quietly irrepressible Wah Sing Ku. As always with the Lethal series, the plot is incredibly simple to follow: someone steals something, someone gets killed, and Murtaugh is reluctantly thrown into the mix while Riggs dives into the case with gleeful aplomb. As with the previous movies, we watch for the sheer action and chemistry alone. The action sequences throughout the fourth installment are exquisite, from the opening scene involving a flamethrower, a burning building, and a half-naked Murtaugh strutting like a chicken (don't ask, just watch), to the climactic showdown that pays genuine tribute to Jet Li's masterful martial art skills. As for chemistry, the bond between these characters is so strong by now that you sometimes feel like you're watching a TV series in its sixth season, such is the warm familiarity between the audience and the personalities on the screen. The humor is more fluid than ever, aided immeasurably by the casting of comedian Chris Rock, who like Li does a great job of making his presence known in some memorable verbal tirades that would bring a smile out of the Farrelly brothers. But it's the verbal and emotional jousting between Glover and Gibson that makes this fourth episode especially appealing; both are in peak form with great physical and verbal timing. One can only hope that if this is indeed the last of the Lethal films, that it won't be the last time we see Glover and Gibson together on screen. --Jeremy Storey

    5 out of 5 stars Lethal Weapon 4   January 21, 2010
    Arnita D. Brown (USA)
Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh, each now feeling too old to be doing what they're doing, try to stop the Chinese Triads from doing their illegal business in the U.S. Uncle Benny, Chinatown's mob boss, has imported Chinese slaves to pay for an artist to create counterfeit Chinese currency which the Triads (led by Jet Li) will use to buy the Four Fathers (heads of the Triads) back from the Chinese military. Chris Rock joins the team as a new cop and Rianne's husband. Lorna is pregnant and considers marriage with Riggs, and Leo Getz is back, now as a private investigator. Who said all movie series become worse with every installment? Lethal Weapon 4 is probably the best fourth movie in a series ever. I find it incredible that the magic is still there. But the person who really steals the whole show is Jet Li, this man is brilliant. Lethal Weapon 4 great ending to a great series, where the magic was always there.

2 out of 5 stars Franchise Killer #2: They're getting too old for this shhhhh   September 24, 2009
    miseryhatescompany (Fort Lauderdale)
In 1987, Danny Glover, Mel Gibson and director Richard Donner got together to give great entry into the buddy genre. Roger gets body slammed by his new partner and a silly but memorable catchphrase was born. That movie was called Lethal Weapon. Lethal Weapon 2 was an excellent entry to the series and for those that say part 2 is weak are inhaling something that I want to stay away from. Lethal Weapon 2 had a more darker edge and was funny as it was entertaining. Plus it had the best villian in the Lethal Weapon series: Arjen Rudd(played well by Joss Ackland). Hands down it was the best sequel in the series. Lethal Weapon 3 is arguably the weak link of the Lethal Weapon series but it had enough funny moments and the chemistry between Riggs and Murtaugh made it worthwhile. Lethal Weapon 4 has none of that.

The plot details Riggs and Murtaugh trying to bust some Chinese mercs that are printing counterfeit money in order to release the 4 fathers(the original members of the Triad gang)into America.

The humor is forced and the action scenes(that dont have Jet Li) are tired. I knew the movie was in trouble when Murtaugh was flapping his arms and making chicken noises. The idiot writers are ruining the integrity of the character for cheap laughs(that the original Lethal Weapon movies were not known for).

Jet Li is pretty good as the villain Wah Sing Ku but he needed a better action movie to be in than this one. He is definetly a better villain than Jack Travis of Lethal Weapon 3 and Jet Li steals every scene he is in but the movie is so poorly written that his scenes are all you will look forward to.

The inclusion of Chris Rock and Joe Pesci's characters in the movie further adds to the frustration. The jokes seems to go on forever like Leo and Butters yapping about cell phone companies and the constant implying that Butters might be gay. There are plenty of scenes that go nowhere and seem to be put in place in order to make the movie reach the two hour mark.

The only genuine funny moment in the dentist office scene. The rest of the humor in this movie blows(like Riggs asking Murtaugh if he bangs his wife during a gun fight). Its sad that a series that started on the right track must end like this but Lethal Weapon 4 stinks. I watched this movie 4 times and found it boring each time. The only good news is that this movie is the last of the series. Not the way the series should end but at least there wont be another Lethal Weapon installment that would be worse than this one.

4 out of 5 stars Best Of LW Sequels & A Good DVD 'Demo'   March 12, 2009
    Craig Connell (Lockport, NY USA)
I read somewhere when the DVD of this film came out that it would be a good "demo" model for dealers trying to sell DVD players and surround-sound equipment. Well, they were right; it's awesome, or at least it was back in '99 when the disc came out, back when few people had DVD players.

A decade later, it's still top-of-line for picture and sound. When bullets are flying around, you hear them from all five speakers. Here it is 10 years later and we still find many films without this kind of excellent surround-speaker participation.

The Lethal Weapon series, this being the fourth and last of them, was popular because of the combination of action, comedy, suspense, romance and drama. For me, they wore thin because the characters were too loud - always shouting at each other, too profane, too smug, and the action often was overdone.

This sequel is no exception, although it was a little tamer than the first three Lethal Weapons, that is until going berserk again in the final few scenes, one of which - the hospital scene - was totally unnecessary. To be honest, some of the action scenes in this movie were amazing even if they had no credibility. You just have to suspend belief and enjoy some of the outrageous scenes in here.

With all that goes on in this film, as in the three previous LWs, you are worn out by the end. If you are a fan of this series, this last sequel should please. I thought it was the best of them.

5 out of 5 stars LETHAL WEAPON 4 (Riggs getting older and slower)   November 14, 2008
    dennis teel (texas usa)
While i liked the film overall,i was disappointed by the fact that in this last installment,it was obviously the intent of the 'creators' of his character to present him as being older and slower. Was this a method of ending the trilogy in a manner that fans would accept or feel comfortable with? i'm not sure, but i know i felt a bit let down by watching my favorite action hero actually confess within the movie that he was getting slower and getting too old for this s***!
what disturbed me even more was that he was getting his butt kicked at every turn and in a couple battles he got his bottom saved by someone else.apart from the things i just mentioned, however,i liked the film. i like the martin riggs character. i just wish that he would have been more of the tough, fast fighting "nobody can touch me" that he was in the first 3.

    1 out of 5 stars BORING!!!   August 20, 2008
Robert E. Patty (Murfreesboro, TN United States)
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

I really enjoyed the first 3 Lethal Weapon movies, but this one is a snoozer. Chris Rock is funny as a comedian, but as an actor he's in need of some serious help. The whole movie was so overblown that it's just ridiculous!

Don't waste your money. If you really must see it borrow it. It's not even worth the time to watch really, much less the cost to rent. Even Mel Gibson can't save this one from the trash heap.
