Amazon.com If you've ever indulged a rock & roll fantasy, Rock Star will give you the vicarious thrill of seeing that fantasy come to life. That's what happens when talented tribute-band singer Chris Cole (Mark Wahlberg) is tapped to replace his idol as frontman for 1980s metal gods Steel Dragon. Chris becomes the groupie-laden "Izzy," his manager girlfriend (Jennifer Aniston) grows weary of sex 'n' drugs on tour, and Rock Star plays out its utterly conventional plot line. Despite the casting of real rockers to support Wahlberg's underrated performance (nicely matched by Aniston and Timothy Spall as Steel Dragon's road manager), his character is too rigidly written to follow an obligatory rise and fall, and even its basis in fact (inspired by Tim "Ripper" Owens's recruitment into Judas Priest) can't conceal the movie's predictable formula. As a cautionary tale it's routine, but as a leather-pants love story, Rock Star's got enough good karma to keep its dream alive. --Jeff Shannon

Simply Awful December 26, 2009 YJM (Somewhere In The South) Another movie I'm coming in with a late review. The reason for this review is seeing this film advertised on Cinemax now, bringing back bad memories. I saw a special premier of this movie with my then wife. The company I worked for at the time knew I was an 80's heavy metal fan, and they got me two tickets to pre-release premier. I was so excited I got to the theater an hour early. Boy what a complete disappointment, I left the theater depressed.
First of all, Mark Wahlberg is a terrible actor, and I use the term "actor" loosely. The only thing I have ever seen this guy in worth a damn was Boogie Knights. He has only one expression in every movie he's in, which is sort of this stern constipated look on his face. His ability to emote is non-existent. Here he just looks goofy with the fake blond wig. Second, Jennifer Aniston is completely miscast. This good, squeaky clean girl would have nothing to do with heavy metal outside of a movie, and her lame 'o' character comes across that way. I have always found her to be a decent actress, but nothing more. The rest of the cast in this movie puts in forgettable performances, but it's not completely their fault with the awful script they had to work with.
As of this writing there are 58 five star reviews and it just proves the point that when it comes to art, people see the same thing with different glasses. I'm absolutely floored anyone could consider this a five star review movie, the fact there are 58 people out there who do is even more surprising. But that happens often on Amazon, where something so terrible, whether it be a book, a movie, a CD, or a product receives five star reviews that it just blows your mind. I mean how many five star reviews did Independence Day get on Amazon? Enough said.
Reading some of the one star reviews, I have to agree with the comments about this movie crapping all over the memory of the 80's. This movie, just like another movie I saw recently called Smiley Face, were directed and written by people with zero knowledge of the subject matter. What do you think you get when a movie is made by someone with no familiarity of the subject matter, exactly, a farce of a movie. This movie is a farce, an insulting farce at that. There is not a single good thing I can say about it, including the ridiculously bad songs. It sounded like metal songs written by someone who just read Heavy Metal For Dummies. Sometimes with bad movies at least the soundtrack is really good, but forget about that with Rock Star. Judas Priest were smart to distance themselves from this turd, unfortunately Zakk Wylde and Jeff Pilson didn't fare as well.
Great movie for 80's generation! November 17, 2009 Christine M. Vermillion (Waldorf, MD) Rockstar is hilarious and very entertaining. Me and all my friends absolutely love this movie! If you grew up during the 80's you will really appreciate this movie.
Pretty Entertaining November 14, 2009 Juliandi Ramadhani (Jakarta, Indonesia) I've watch this movie many times before on VCD and HBO, and now I finally have it on DVD thanks to Amazon.com. The movie itself is pretty entertaining to watch and a bit funny, though. It's kinda one of those fantasy-like movie that brings your imagination comes to life. In this case, becoming a rockstar of your favorite rock band. There's also a love story alongside the story, a conflict within the band, and also girlfriend, and of course a great performance by Mark Wahlberg and Jennifer Aniston. It's a comforting movie to watch and definitely the one you don't wanna miss!!
AWESOME!! October 30, 2009 Tracey Donathen (Walhalla,Mi) My husband and i LOVE this movie!! It's one that you can watch over and over and never get sick of.
Awesome movie! August 12, 2009 Anti MTV (peru) This is one of my favorite movies.
A wannabe singer from a so called tribute band to the steel dragons leads the lead singer to replace the former vocalist from the steel dragons and to become the new member cause of his talented singing. Mark walberg and jennifer aniston were great in this movie.
Highly recommended for hard rockers!
