One of the Best TV Shows Ever February 10, 2010 Daniel P. MacDonald (Sandy, Oregon USA) One of my favorite series of all time, finally available in an affordable edition.
Initially, I didn't watch Farscape, but then I saw an episode where one of the characters went into a coma and lived through several "cartoon" encounters. I was caught by the "Chuck Jones" treatment where he took the place of the Road Runner, with the Coyote being yet another character. I ended up watching the entire episode with fascination.
After that, I had to see more. While I thought that the "Muppets" (there are really only two) would make for an unbelievable show, I am happy that I was proven wrong. The character interaction, and superb writing makes this one of the most enjoyable shows I've ever seen.
When I had the chance to go back and watch the series from the beginning, I was even more pleased that the acting and writing was good right from the start.
My Favorite TV Series Ever February 8, 2010 Joe Wood (New Hampshire) If you like Science Fiction, and if you stick with Farscape, you will end up ranking this series above the Stargates, Star Treks, and even the new Battlestar Galacticas. It is funny, moving, romantic, unpredictable, character-based, as well as consistently excellent in vision, scope, writing, direction, and technological achievement. It is truly a wild ride. The only series that comes close is Firefly, but that was sadly short-lived. During the late 1990s and early 2000s I did not have access to television, so I did not know about Farscape until this year, and bought the entire series and the Peacekeeper Wars movie "conclusion" based on an Amazon review. Watching this series (and rewatching it with my children) was like finding gold in the backyard stream. The series is comprised of 22 episode seasons from 1998-2002 (with a three-hour 2004 movie that ends the story in spectacular and satisfying fashion), for the equivalent total of 92 episodes. The production values make it more like a wonderful 92 chapter novel. For around $65 (at February 2010 Amazon prices) for the whole shebang, it is also the best bargain in the history of DVD TV series. The first season is uneven, but the character development is steady and sure-handed, and builds to a satisfying conclusion. I was hesitant to give it a try because I heard it had a lot of "Henson Company" muppets, and it does take a while to accept the alien "puppet" character (Rigel 16th), but stick with it and you will eventually grow to enjoy his often humorous and sometimes moving contribution to the cast. As the seasons go by, you really do believe that you are living another part of the universe. Go for it!
The greatest sci-fi story ever told. February 7, 2010 Adelaide K. Mcmillan (Chattanooga, TN, USA) "FarScape" is, bar none, the greatest sci-fi story ever told. It tells of the adventures of John Crichton, a human astronaut who finds himself transported away from Earth through a wormhole during a try-out flight for his new space craft.
From there onward, John will meet new lifeforms, including a sebacean peacekeeper named Ayryn Sun, who he will fall in love over the course of 4 seasons.
John Crichton will make new friends in Ka Dargo, Chiana, Rygel, Zaan and Moya - and enemies in Kreiss and Scorpio.
The four years of this show constitute a story arc that is one of the most well-written, most-engrossing I have ever been given the privilege to watch. It is truly a masterpiece in storytelling that I rewatch on a regular basis and enjoy every time more.
The show was canceled after 4 seasons but brought back for a 3-hour miniseries that wrapped up the story, much under the pressure of enraged fans who could not believe the story of human John Crichton and sebacean Ayryn Sun would not have a resolution. This mini-series, called "The Peacekeeper Wars" was both a bittersweet moment as it put a final stop to a true gem, but also the proof that -sometimes- things can be done right and viewers' dedication and loyalty is rewarded.
"Farscape" holds a very special place in my heart -next to "Firefly"- because it is a story of adventure, friendship, danger, redemption and love. All the characters you meet during the show grow and change -for the better or the worse- because of their interactions with each other and the people the become by the end of the series are not the people the were at the beginning, which is a true oddity in television.
I tell of "FarScape" to everyone, sooner or later. And of all those I convinced to give it a try, I never heard anything but praise and bewilderment that such a wonderful show was ever taken off the air. But maybe this is where the mystique of "FarScape" really is, the fact that it gained -and is still gaining- such a cult following so many years after being canceled.
Go on, give it a try.
This is a story that will haunt you for as long as you live.
Happy it has been released finally! February 7, 2010 Belszy (VA) I was thrilled to see it was re released thru A and E vice original set and the price is much more affordable. Wish they would continue the series.
Finally! February 7, 2010 Donald Dube (Holyoke, MA USA) Finally the best made scifi series is on DVD.... not for an outrageous price like the last sets!
My favorite part of this series is the irreverent humor, but it doesn't take away from the tension, drama, or action in the story... you can tell Aussie's made this! In one episode someone complains about the living quarters and John Crichton replies "Well.... welcome to the USS BUTTCRACK!". It is a prison ship, not a hotel!
The female cast members aren't window dressing like in many programs. In this series they are every bit as tough as the men... and in the case of Pa'u Zotoh Zhaan and Aeryn Sun, far more dangerous!
Another good thing is that the FARSCAPE universe isn't a liberal dream world like Star Trek. The characters don't always get along, and the political leaders don't know what is best for the masses... as in the real world, they are only interested in their own ends.
This whole series was also a weekly resume for JIM HENSON"S CREATURE SHOP. Instead of gluing beautifully painted latex parts on someone's head and calling them an alien (as done in a previously mentioned series), in this series they had film quality Animatronics. This allowed two main characters to be puppets! You can read their emotions on their faces, and heard it in the voice so well that very quickly they become characters in the series and not gadgets. They also did full body makeups on many of the regular cast!
Sure all the VFX were perfect, but the most important thing for any series is the writing, and acting. This series was NOT lacking there either! All the actors did a wonderful job, and it isn't easy when you are often reacting to something that will be added in later by the effects people. I would burst out laughing if I had to kiss someone with brown tentacles sticking out of their head!
I wish the series was able to finish it's five year run, but it was dumped after four years in-spite of great ratings... apparently because of money. This leaves the series ended on a cliff hanger. Fortunately the television film finished it... as usual not in a sappy Hollywood way.
