| Customer Reviews: As with most things, somewhere in the middle March 11, 2010 T. Hardin (seaside, oregon) Ive been intrigued with what i'd read about Joel Houssin, searching for any English language translations of his crime books. To date, my search has been unsuccessful. Seeing his name on this English subtitled disc,I thought "here's my chance to see what the hype's about". And the verdict?
Meh...
This movie doesnt suck by any means. It's highly visual, has fast-paced editing (though, that doesnt necessarily equate to a fast-paced story), has decent production values and has its share of "quirky" characters and situations. I was left with the impression that the film makers are trying awfully hard to be "hip", ala Tarantino or Guy Ritchie. Dont know if this is an extension of Houssin's source material, or the stylistic choices of the filmmakers?
And while this was reasonably entertaining, it sure isnt a "masterpiece" of the genre, either! It was just a little too over-the-top to take as a serious crime film, and quite frankly the story wasnt anything new. Not sure when i'll reach for this one again. If possible, my advice is to rent it.
Stupid and no point October 14, 2007 dobie i like it (Asia) 0 out of 7 found this review helpful
I just want to say it is a stupid movie which is not valued to say anything more.
french action movie June 25, 2007 Margaux Paschke (New York) 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
This movie isn't Shakespeare folks and doesn't pretend to be anything but an over-the-top cops and robbers movie from the french perspective. I disagree with the previous reviewer who said it didn't make any sense. It makes perfect sense for criminals hopped up on drugs to be violent and out of control. It makes perfect sense for certain cops to be tired of dealing with this and crossing the line.
There was the message that American influence on french culture is NOT a good thing and ummm, I think the scene where after doing his business outside, the bad guy rips a page out of the high brow magazine to wipe himself was making a point. This little gem of a movie is not a thinking film but rather, an in-your-face action fest that zips along from start to end. After the opening scene, we see a man and woman (played with amazing skill by Vincent Cassel and Monica Bellucci) rob an armored truck and their creepy characters and violence sets the tone. We meet the whole bank robbing gang and watch them plan another heist. The cops planning to stop them are brutally outmatched. The second squad of police are not so civic minded and the chase is on between them and Dobermann.
There are two scenes with babies and both are disquieting and make the point that no good can come from children surrounded by violence. All the over the edge characters meet up in a club aptly named Joe's Hell. Drug usage, foul language and nudity ensues. The clash between Dobermann and the Christini, the cop, finally takes place. It's one of the few movies that I've had to close my eyes - so be prepared for disturbing violence. Simply, it's an adrenalin rush of a story that has appeal for a certain audience. It's a masterpiece for it's genre. You decide whether it's for you.
what a mess May 22, 2007 JustAForeignReader (Major Earthquake Faultline) 1 out of 12 found this review helpful
this french crime movie is a total mess. like everybody of the production team was on drug. messy screenplay, acting, directing, jump around crazy dialog, excessive violence, shaky camera. lot of movies nowadays just like this movie: messy, excessive violence, clueless screenplay and dialog, drugs, explosive sound track, cool cars, drag queens, corrupted cops, robberies....what else is new? you watched, but could never get connected. for your reference: 'smoking aces' is the newest similar messy and crazy movie. try it, then you might understand what i mean here.
Dobermann is wacky September 17, 2002 carlos Ortega (Mexico City, Distrito Federal Mexico) The movie has an ok plot, but what keeps this movie exciting are the stylish action sequences (this movie was one of the pioneers in the use of the bullet time effect used on The Matrix) . Get ready to watch Yann Le Pentec aka Le Dobermann ooze coolness. A perfect example of style over substance.
