Amazon.com The 11 episodes that conclude Rescue Me's smokin' fifth season go from carpe diem to some very bad karma for Tommy (Denis Leary). "You seem to do whatever you want and nothing bad ever happens to you," Uncle Teddy (Lenny Clarke) states in the tense final moments of the harrowing and possibly game-changing finale. That's not entirely true. Tommy's family and personal life remain compellingly complicated: he falls off the wagon after a year of sobriety and tries to juggle supposed "no-strings" relationships with the volatile meds-upped Sheila (Callie Thorne) and his estranged wife, Janet (Andrea Roth), who finally issues Tommy an ultimatum. Sparking the season's final episodes is Maura Tierney as "hot older chick" Kelly, who intrigues Tommy after she rushes back into a burning building to retrieve a mysterious suitcase. "We're not a happy-type show," Leary states during a convivial cast-member "family dinner," the most substantial of this three-disc set's special features. But there are some inspired comic set pieces, including one grocery store excursion with Tommy, Lou (John Scurti), and company that descends into chaos. Other comic subplots (Franco taking up boxing and Mike's awful bar band) mercifully fizzle out. There is also some satisfying payback as Lou turns the tables on Candy, his ex-hooker, ex-thief girlfriend from season 2 with whom he is reunited. Rescue Me did not mellow in this fifth season. The banter is as profane as ever ("Too far, dude"), the worldview remains char black (Tommy subverts an intervention by pouring drinks for all), and the show continues to take bold chances. Suffice to say that one doesn't expect a Busby Berkeley musical homage from Rescue Me. As with all good cliffhanger endings, this season's conclusion leaves viewers eager to see what awaits on the other side. --Donald Liebenson

Not worth it ! February 25, 2010 James Soriano Not at all happy that this season (5) was split into two volumes.I have purchased every season cause i can't watch the show at it's regularly scheduled time.
I love this series, but this season(5) was absolutely not up to par,let alone worthy of two volumes. I feel taken advantage of just cause they added a few extra shows this season..If you can, rent or borrow season 5 from a friend and save your money....
rescue me season5 volume2 February 17, 2010 Joe M. Tyleshevski I really enjoy this series. This dvd came in great shape, and in a timely manner. was very pleased with this purchase.
Half a Season February 13, 2010 Dave (Phoenix) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I am absolutely NOT paying the same price for HALF a season as the cost for a full season!! I have the previous 4 seasons and will not be purchasing season 5 until it is all in one set for the same price. There is no excuse for this other than GREED. KEEP IT!!!!!
Dear Mr. Leary February 8, 2010 NYC critic (NEW YORK, NEW YORK United States) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I used to thoroughly enjoy this show. It was well written, acted, and conceived. This season saw an end to all that. Like most long-running American shows, characters have outlived their usefulness and story arcs have begun to repeat and become tiresome. Some suggestions:
1. Get rid of the wife. It was a brilliant--and necessary--move in Dexter; follow suit. The city is filled with women and potential story lines. Being hung-up on your ex for going on years now is the stuff of "Young and the Restless."
2. Cut back on Sheila. She is occasionally good for comic relief, but too often is too much.
3. Enough with the AA soapbox. I realize that addiction is a serious ad worthy topic, but the see-saw is tedious.
4. Develop more stories about the firehouse characters. Avoid stunt casting. (The Michael J. Fox subplot was pointless and ridiculous and having his character squeeze your package for minutes while you stood there and took it made your character weak, nothing else.) It seems as if most characters are now in search of something to do. Find it for them.
5. Don't wait until "end episodes" to pull out the stops and up the ante.
This used to be a great show and could be again, but if you've truly run out of ideas, let the show go. Maybe four or five years is all it should have been to start with.
Best Show On TV January 31, 2010 D. CO I was kind of worried after watching season 4 it wasn't as good as the first 3 seasons. I feared the show had reached it's peak. Season 5 shot that idea down quick, fast, and in a hurry! I am currently working in Iraq (not in the milatary)so I don't get to see them til they come out on DVD. I was disappointed when I saw it was only 1 of 2. But I got the first so late I didn't have too long before to 2nd was out. Back to the review everything you loved about seasons 1-3 is back. The action, drama, and most of all comedy is back and better than ever. You will be glad you didn't give up on the series. A must have for anyone who likes a show.
