Nearly 20 years after riding his last Crusade, Harrison Ford makes a welcome return as archaeologist/relic hunter Indiana Jones in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, an action-packed fourth installment that's, in a nutshell, less memorable than the first three but great nostalgia for fans of the series. Producer George Lucas and screenwriter David Koepp (War of the Worlds) set the film during the cold war, as the Soviets--replacing Nazis as Indy's villains of choice and led by a sword-wielding Cate Blanchett with black bob and sunglasses--are in pursuit of a crystal skull, which has mystical powers related to a city of gold. After escaping from them in a spectacular opening action sequence, Indy is coerced to head to Peru at the behest of a young greaser (Shia LaBeouf) whose friend--and Indy's colleague--Professor Oxley (John Hurt) has been captured for his knowledge of the skull's whereabouts. Whatever secrets the skull holds are tertiary; its reveal is the weakest part of the movie, as the CGI effects that inevitably accompany it feel jarring next to the boulder-rolling world of Indy audiences knew and loved. There's plenty of comedy, delightful stunts--ants play a deadly role here--and the return of Raiders love interest Karen Allen as Marion Ravenwood, once shrill but now softened, giving her ex-love bemused glances and eye-rolls as he huffs his way to save the day. Which brings us to Ford: bullwhip still in hand, he's a little creakier, a lot grayer, but still twice the action hero of anyone in film today. With all the anticipation and hype leading up to the film's release, perhaps no reunion is sweeter than that of Ford with the role that fits him as snugly as that fedora hat. --Ellen A. Kim

5 out of 5 stars Indiana Jones is back!   December 4, 2008
And he's still kicking some behind like only he can!!

Personally i loved the movie and it only gets better with more viewings. I know some had some issues with the alien twist, but for me it made sense that as an archeologist, Indy would have to deal with this issue sooner or later. One only has to look at ancient civilizations to realize the tremendous impact the 'Gods' had on many of them. And those 'Gods' came from the sky... people can draw their own conclusions on this. I did find it refreshing that they just didnt make the aliens little green men from mars. They were interdimensional beings, and i loved it. I've always been fascinated by UFO's so i guess that's why i had no issues with this story for Indy.

As for the dvd itself, it has many fantastic features that touch on the different aspects of making this movie, and a brief look at the history of Indy.

Overall, i highly recommend the movie and the 2 disc version of the dvd.

2 out of 5 stars Left the Biblical themes behind for tired old typical one.   December 4, 2008

Without giving away the end i will just say you are better off passing on this movie. Indy has always been my fav movie charecter but this movie ruined the memory.
I even thought George Lucas was brilliant for his historic films. Seeing this i realized what a 1 trick Pony he really is.
I wanted to give it 1 star. I have waved all my friends/family away. There is a reason the movie is already in the Budget Bin for a new release. It gets 2 stars for nostalgia only.

    4 out of 5 stars Indy's Back   December 3, 2008

After a 15-year hiatus, Harrison Ford has reprised his best role as the swash-buckling, fedora-wearing archaeologist/university professor Indiana Jones. This time, Indy's up against Russian agents led by a sword wielding female commander, played by Cate Blanchett. The two groups are in pursuit of a crystal skull, which has powers related to a mythical city of gold.

Indy, along with his partner Mac, were captured by the Russians in Mexico. Upon returning to the U.S., Indy and the Russians head to Roswell, New Mexico, site of the infamous "Area 51", which is loaded with secrets. Indy is forced to locate a box containing the mummified remains of an extra-terrestrial who crashed in the desert. But, Indy has a surprise in store. After managing to escape from the Russians, Indy wanders into a specially-constructed city with mannequins designed to measure the effects of an atomic blast. Indy manages to save himself by hiding inside a lead-protected refrigerator. But, the adventure's just beginning.

Indy is then convinced to head to Peru at the behest of Mutt Williams (Shia LaBeouf). Mutt's friend Professor Oxley, played by John Hurt, has been captured because he knows the location of the crystal skull. Oxley is also a colleague of Indy's. It is said that whoever finds the skull and returns it to its rightful place will gain knowledge beyond their wildest dreams. But, the Russians are on to the skull as well, and its a race between them and Indy to find the skull first. Along the way, Marion Ravenwood, Indy's original love interest from "Raiders of the Lost Ark" returns, played once again by Karen Allen. Marion holds a revealing secret that surprises Indy. Marion has softened somewhat over the years, but she still holds a spell over Indy.

Harrison Ford is once again at his swashbuckling best as Professor Jones. Indy has become Ford's signature role over they years; even above his role of Han Solo in the first "Star Wars" trilogy. Karen Allen is very good as the gutsy but softer Marion, and Shia LaBeouf does a surprisingly good job as Mutt. There is lots of great action scenes throughout: I especially liked the scenes with the giant ants, and, of course, there's some great comedy from Indy, too. This film might not stack up to the first three movies in the series, but it is still very good and definitely worth watching.

I highly recommend this action-packed movie. Its a must-see for Harrison Ford fans and fans of the first three Indiana Jones movies.

4 out of 5 stars A somewhat different kind of Indy movie...   December 3, 2008
0 out of 1 found this review helpful

Before I saw this my mother and some others said this was'nt as good as the first three Indy movies. And I have to agree, they were right. Me and my brothers grew up in the 80's 90's on the Indiana Jones series. I do understand Harrison Ford is ageing and can't do all the action that he use to do. Sad Sean Connery was not in the film, although you do see him in the photo aswell as Marcus on Indy's desk. But this was'nt a totally bad movie either, it had its moments good and bad. Be cool if Harrison Ford, Spielberg, Lucus decided to make ONE more Indy movie and let it be "Indiana Jones, & The lost city of Atlantis"...

Horrible way to end the Indiana Jones franchise. This is by far the worse movie in the franchise. I'd rank them from best to worse as 1-Raiders, 2-Last Crusade, 3-Temple of Doom, 4-Crystal Skull.

You'd think Spielberg/Lucas and company would create better films as they got older and more experience. /shrug
