Roger Ebert proclaimed it "one of the most extraordinary films I've ever seen," and there's no denying the avalanche of wild images in The Fall: grand castles, desert vistas, elephants swimming in the open ocean. Commercial and music-video director Tarsem has piled these visions into an elaborate remake of an obscure Bulgarian film, Yo Ho Ho, which is anchored in (but by no means limited to) a quiet hospital during the silent-movie era. A stunt man (Lee Pace) is laid up with leg injuries, and an eye-popping black-and-white prologue (utterly mystifying while we're watching it) tells us how he got here. Depressed over his disability and a recent lost love, he plans suicide, but is temporarily derailed by the inquisitive friendship of a little girl (Catinca Untaru), to whom he tells wild stories of adventurers and princesses. We see these stories, which is where the dizzying visuals come in. This movie probably won't inspire many lukewarm responses: either you'll fall madly for this paean to storytelling magic, or you'll be suspicious about the parade of pretty pictures, which tend to have a magazine-layout sheen. The movie certainly has more soul than Tarsem's yucky previous feature, The Cell, and the scenes between Pace and Untaru (who scores an 11 on the cuteness scale) are genuinely charming. The director actually put a considerable amount of his own money into the production (which shot in over 20 countries), and whether you buy his vision or not, he put his money on the screen. --Robert Horton

    5 out of 5 stars Redemption   November 30, 2008
There isn't much I can add to the many positive reviews here by way of recapping the plot, so I will only comment upon the sheer beauty of this wonderful, unusual film. You simply must see it on Blu-ray, on as large a screen as possible*. I was mesmerized by it. Add to the stunning visuals the thoroughly heartwarming performance of little Catinca Untaru, and you have one of the most charming, yet mind-blowing, films I've ever seen.

*I had the pleasure of watching it thusly on my Model C 106 HDtv format Mw Manual Pull Down Screen via my PlayStation 3 80GB and Panasonic PT-AE900U Home Theater Projector -- a hi-def video setup that cost me under $2k. You will, of course, still need to spring for an appropriate audio setup.

5 out of 5 stars Stunningly beautiful and magical   November 29, 2008
The Fall is a visually stunning movie with the charm and wonder of a fairy tale. The cinematography is amazing, and the cast is excellent. The story is simple but the subtle wit and wonderful visuals really make up for it. I highly recommend this movie!

5 out of 5 stars My new favorite film   November 25, 2008
The pure imagination in the storytelling, acting and cinematography gripped me like not many movies do. This is my new favorite film. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Visually and emotionally appealing   November 25, 2008

The Fall is stunning not only for it's epic visual style but also for it's intimate emotional scenes. Lee Pace and Cantinca Untaru provide the heart of the story as patients at a California hospital who become friends. Pace's character Roy spins a fascinating yarn for the young Alexandria (Untaru) as he tries to gain her trust. The scenes of the "bandit" story showcase director Tarsem's signature work with color and landscapes. All-in-all the film is delightful, with it's unexpected touches of humor and whimsy and the completely unaffected performance by Untaru.

5 out of 5 stars You are a genius, Darwin! where do you get all these ideas?   November 22, 2008

Magnifico! A most beautiful phantasy story around a 'real life' hospital friendship of a 5 year old immigrant girl (the 'actress' is from Romania, her movie script family seems to be Bulgarian (?)) and a suicidal injured stuntman in California during silent movie times. The man tells the girl stories, which drag them both into colourful adventures all over the world and which get more and more mixed up with events in the hospital and the friends' real life. A major source of charm is the little girl Alexandria's cute immigrant English. (is not gibberish! is English!)
I did not expect to like the film so much; my daughter convinced me that I needed to watch it by pointing out that Darwin and Wallace have parts in it and that it is partly set in Bali. Among other photogenic locations.
