Amazon.com Released in late 1999, The Bone Collector was originally promoted as a thriller in the tradition of The Silence of the Lambs and Seven, suggesting that it would earn a place among those earlier, better films. Nice try, but no cigar. The Bone Collector settles instead for mere competence and the modest rewards of a well-handled formula. With a terrific cast at his service, director Phillip Noyce (Dead Calm, Patriot Games) turns the pulpy indulgence of Jeffery Deaver's novel into a slick potboiler that is grisly fun only if you don't pick it apart. Noyce expertly builds palpable tension around a series of gruesome murders that lead us into the darkest nooks of New York City. Now a bedridden quadriplegic prone to life-threatening seizures and suicidal depression, forensics detective Lincoln Rhyme (Denzel Washington) gets a new lease on life with a sharp young beat cop (Angelina Jolie) who's a wizard at analyzing crime scenes. She does field work while he deciphers clues from his high-tech Manhattan loft, and as they narrow the search their lives are increasingly endangered. As this formulaic plot grows moldy, Noyce resorts to narrative shortcuts, using perfunctory scenes to manipulate the viewer and taking morbid pleasure in his revelation of the murder scenes. And yet it all works, to a point, and the cast (including Queen Latifah and Luiz Guzman) is much better than the material. If you're looking for a few good thrills, The Bone Collector is a pretty safe bet. --Jeff Shannon

I Wanted to Hate This December 21, 2008 jewessjen (Minneapolis, MN) Not that Angelina Jolie, No freakin' way. I was so jaded by Angelina Jolie. I wanted to hate this movie so badly. It kept coming on cable again and again and finally in November I was sick with the flu, it was Thursday morning, I think, and the only thing on the telly was The Bone Collector and so I bit. I lay there sick as a dog and watched the film. Interestingly, Jolie wasn't taking full advantage of her considerable assets. Her hair was pulled back, make-up natural, she was dressed mostly in cop clothes and her acting was very low-key. She was in character. She was acting. I was impressed. Denzel Washington had me within minutes. He's a gifted actor and the way he interacts with his supporting cast brings out the best in everyone else as well, like Queen Latifah and Luiz Guzman. I truly think Denzel was put on this earth to act. The story is about a serial killer and they're running out of time to save people's lives. Denzel is paralyzed but a brilliant criminologist so he needs Angelina to run around doing his `leg work'. But since she's sort of a newby on the force, it's difficult for her to, say, saw the arms off a dead lady (so he can get her prints) she finds even though he asks her very nicely. There's lots of gross out stuff here for you sick people, too. It's your typical 'crime/serial killer/ paralyzed cop' movie with a few twists. If you pay close enough attention to the film, you'll be moved at the end when the credits roll and they play that old song by Kate Bush and Peter Gabriel, "Don't Give Up." It fits. I think this movie gave me my faith back in Angelina Jolie. I know she won an Oscar for 'Girl, Interupted' but I also know she makes weird choices like 'Wanted' and 'Gone in 60 Seconds'. My next Jolie foray will be 'The Changeling'.
the bone collector October 28, 2008 Elizabeth LaTrace Angelina Jolie takes a lot of risks in acting and thats what makes her SO amazing! She can play any role that they think up of. Denzels paralyzed character is so strong, you fall in love with him! This movie is very suspenseful and a great watch! I highly recommend this movie to anyone who likes a great detective story because you will NOT be able to figure out who is the one killing every one until the very end :)
The Bone Collector {HD DVD} September 27, 2008 Lou Scrobogna (sunbury, victoria Australia) I saw this movie when first released and thought it was a good show at the time so bought it on HD DVD with a good performance by Denzel Washington and Angelina Jolie four out of five .

I cannot comment on the the film. It would not play in any of my three DVD players and two computers.
IT'S ONLY ME BUT: June 1, 2008 Joan M. Mckeown (ontario, canada) JOLIE AND DENZIL, WHAT A TREAT. A GREAT MOVIE. DENZIL PLAYS A COP SPECIALIZING IN FOSENICS AND PROFILINF AND JOLIE IS A YOUNGE ROOKIE COP WITH A FLARE FOR THE SAMW. DENZIL TAKES HER UNDER HIS WING, THEN GETS SHOT AND JOLIE MUST TAKE OVER THE CASE. WONDERFULL ACTING ON BOTH PARTS. JM
