Amazon.com Fairy tales and contemporary satire collide in Ella Enchanted, based upon the enormously popular young adult novel by Gail Carson Levine. Ella (Anne Hathaway, The Princess Diaries) received an unfortunate fairy gift in her cradle: No matter what anyone tells her to do, she's compelled to obey. Despite this, Ella grows up to be a headstrong young woman who refuses to swoon at the sight of a charming young prince (Hugh Dancy). To get her gift removed, Ella braves a forest packed with ogres, elves, and giants to find her fairy godmother (Vivica A. Fox, Kill Bill, Vol. 1). Much like Shrek, Ella Enchanted is sprinkled with comic modern references; for some, this will make the whimsy too cute, while others will appreciate the snarky jabs. Also featuring Cary Elwes (The Princess Bride), Minnie Driver, Joanna Lumley, Eric Idle, and many others. --Bret Fetzer

Pretty fair family fare - if you don't mind a little disco December 27, 2008 J. Laughlin Really a 3 and a half. The book and the movie- many differences, but still, the movie is entertaining. The big addition was the Bee Gees and the disco vibe that we got every do often. And even though there wasn't really room, I'd like to have seen even more prominent roles to the character actors like Eric Idle and others all the same.
Cute movie December 14, 2008 M 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I read the book first, and in all honesty I think it was better than the movie version. I'm not trashing the movie, but the movie was peppered with pop culture references (Prince Char fan club, teen magazines, community college, and what have you) but overall, this movie was decent and a fun movie to watch. I would have been happy if the script writers and producers were more faithful to the book, since some major liberties were taken, but what can you do now?
Ella Enchanged October 24, 2008 Elliot 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a great movie for women young and old. I love the story line and the charactors. Some of the acting is really bad, too dramtized, but it doesn't stop me from watching this over and over again.
Hack Movie October 24, 2008 coopertex (CA United States) I can't believe that so many people find this movie even slightly interesting. Ella Enchanted is a horrid piece of work as far as film making goes. The acting is one of the worst, next to B-movie quality. The actors sound like they didn't memorize the script and have to read it to us on camera instead. Their performances are phoned in as well, looking awkward and stiff. The timing and delivery of dialog sounds weird and not the way people actually speak. The special effects or CGI shots are third rate as well, I've seen television commercials with better special effects than the ones seen here. The set designs and set lighting effects look low budget and fake, almost like cardboard quality to it. The cardboard quality look of the sets reminds me of real live plays of I've seen in person, which is okay for a play but unacceptable for a film. There are much better fantasy films than this one. Ella Enchanted is not worth your time or money! If you want to see other family fantasy movies I recommend: Princess Bride, Willow, Shrek, Enchanted (not to be confused with "Ella Enchanted")
She isn't Shakespeare's wife... July 14, 2008 R. Bagula (Lakeside, Ca United States) So Cinderella comes around fractured with a prince with a wicked uncle as well as a wicked step mother for ella. An the enchantment of always doing what she is told with this beautiful star brings up some startling fantasies in the male audience? I like fairy tales and Anne Hathaway, but I think she deserved a better movie! The studio special effects in the forest are kind of poor, as is the dialog in many cases. The jokes almost come off too. A little better script with an actress like this and you might of had a classic.
