2 out of 5 stars Beautiful Scenery, bad plot, bad acting   December 26, 2008

I bought this movie to see the Dutch scenery. I could barely get through the movie though and I'm too embarrassed to lend it to anyone. Glenn Close also did a poor job.

    5 out of 5 stars A Painting's Journey   October 24, 2008

Essentially told in reverse time, this is the story of a lost great painting, the artist who created it and the people who owned the masterpiece throughout the centuries. It is a compelling tale of love, tragedy and beauty.

The superbly produced entry of "Hallmark Hall of Fame," which was filmed in Holland, begins in the present day when a new art instructor (Thomas Gibson) at an American prep school is approached by Glenn Close, a reclusive history teacher, and asked to her home. There, she shows him what appears to be a unknown painting by Vermeer.

Close relates that, among the people who have owned the painting are a wealthy society woman (Ellen Burstyn), an impoverished farmer and an elderly gentleman who wanted it because it reminded him of his first love. However, perhaps the most disturbing part of the saga is how the painting happened to come into the possession of Close and her now invalid father.

Directed by Brent Shields, the film features exquisite performances, as well as a spectacular flood sequence.

4 out of 5 stars Brush With Fate   January 12, 2008
    Aldo C. D'Eredita (Richland, Iowa)
This was a very good movie, the only thing is, is that you have to watch it twice to really get an understanding on the sequence of where and to whom the painting was passed down. Those sequences can be a bit confusing if your not paying attention. Glenn Close gives a wonderful performance as the spinster Professor with a secret. The twist at the end of the movie took me by surprise. A very informative and educational film on one of the works of Vermeer and what could have possible happened to some of the greatest masterpieces we may never see. I highly recommend this movie to history buffs, art lovers and anyone who likes movies with a bit of a twist at the end.

The acting was great and for the most part the book was kept in site.
