    Product Description
Writer/director Wolfgang Petersen (Air Force One In the Line of Fire) cranks up the suspense in this riveting thriller that will "keep you guessing [up until its] shockingly unexpected ending" (The Washington Post)! A stellar cast-including Tom Berenger Bob Hoskins Greta Scacchi Joanne Whalley-Kilmer and Corbin Bernsen-breathes life into this gripping film noir about the survivor of a car accident who begins to suspect his near-death...was no accident.Dan Merrick (Tom Berenger) struggles to reconstruct his life after a disfiguring accident leaves him without much of a memory - and in the care of a wife (Greta Scacchi) and his friends who seem to be repainting his past! And as Merrick begins to reconstruct his life strange flashes of memory begin to surface each drawing him further into a maze of corruption that could prove more deadly than any accident!System Requirements:Starring: Tom Berenger Bob Hoskins Greta Scacchi Corbin Bernsen and Joanne Whalley-Kilmer. Tom Berenger stars as an amnesiac who investigates his life before a car wreck took his memory, and finds that things were not all they should have been. The promising mystery gets less interesting as the script becomes more perfunctorily complicated, and a crucial plot twist toward the end throws the story onto a different track rather than letting the existing one grow richer through better characters. People don't count as much as surprises do in this film, so in that sense Shattered is a passable potboiler, no more and no less. Wolfgang Petersen (In the Line of Fire) capably directs, but even he can't work depth into the margins. Solid supporting performances from Greta Scacchi, Bob Hoskins, and Joanne Whalley-Kilmer. --Tom Keogh

    5 out of 5 stars Great!   November 9, 2008

This movie is really great. The first time that I watched it, it blew me away. I had to watch it again immediately. If you like mystery shows, you should buy this one!

3 out of 5 stars Who done what?   September 9, 2008
    Kona (Emerald City)
It's a foggy New Year's Eve and Dan Merrick (Tom Berenger) and his wife Judith (Greta Scacchi) have had too much to drink; without warning their car flies off a cliff. Judith escapes without injuries but Dan's body is mutilated, his face is destroyed, and he's in a coma. When he comes out of it, he has amnesia, but slowly regains his life with the help of his loving (too loving?) wife.

The first half of this movie was pretty good with a lot of edge-of-your-seat suspense that kept me wondering what would happen next; the last half, however, was just dopey - completely lacking in plot and thrills and really amateurish. Berenger and Scacchi weren't believable or compelling at all; if only their characters had been played by Richard Gere and Diane Lane - now THERE would be a really good movie. Bob Hoskins plays a comic-relief private investigator and he's fun to watch, unfortunately the script lets him down at the end and things get ridiculous.

The film has a moody film noir-look to it and the locations around San Francisco are effective, but writer/director Wolfgang Petersen has done better work in the past (Das Boot, The Perfect Storm). This miscast and ill-conceived story is just disappointing. 2.5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars A revelation that was consistent with the clues but completely unexpected   September 7, 2008
Charles Ashbacher (Marion, Iowa United States(cashbacher@yahoo.com))
Rich San Francisco architect Dan Merrick and his wife Judith are in a terrible auto accident. While Judith is thrown clear and relatively unscathed, Dan rides the car down to the bottom of the cliff and is very lucky to be alive. His face is severely damaged and he is in a deep coma. When Dan recovers consciousness, he suffers from severe amnesia about his identity and undergoes repeated plastic surgery on his face. This surgery is successful and he recovers with few physical scars. All through Dan's ordeal, Judith is by his side, offering love, encouragement and knowledge about his past.
However, as Dan begins to have flashes of insight into his past, inconsistencies begin to appear. There is evidence of adultery, contradictions about the manner of the accident and hints that nothing was as it appears to him. When Dan encounters private investigator Gus Klein and talks with him, some clues appear and he learns that he himself may have been a very bad guy.
While we were watching the movie, my wife Kathy and I conversed about who were the "bad guys." As clues were revealed, we altered our opinions, as even the innocent characters seem to have a tone of wildness to them. There is a stunning revelation that neither of us suspected; it suddenly made it all come together. As is the case in the best mysteries, the solution is a logical conclusion from the clues yet is completely unanticipated.
