Amazon.com Loud, fast, and proudly out of control, Grindhouse is a tribute to the low-budget exploitation movies that lurked at drive-ins and inner city theaters in the '60s and early '70s. Writers/directors Quentin Tarantino (Kill Bill) and Robert Rodriguez (Sin City) cooked up this three-hour double feature as a way to pay homage to these films, and the end result manages to evoke the down-and-dirty vibe of the original films for an audience that may be too young to remember them. Rodriguez's Planet Terror is a rollicking horror/sci-fi/action piece about a plague outbreak that turns citizens into cannibalistic murderers; it's heavy on the gore and explosions but also features a terrific cast of A players (Freddy Rodriguez, Naveen Andrews, Marley Shelton) and B-movie vets (Michael Biehn, Jeff Fahey, Tom Savini) and the indelible image of Rose McGowan as a stripper whose torn-off leg is replaced by a high-powered machine gun. If Tarantino's feature was a nod to the moody, genre-jumping exploitation of the early '70s, Rodriguez's contribution to the Grindhouse aesthetic pays tribute to the manic gorefests from Italy and the States in the early '80s. And much like the film itself, the supplemental features on Terror's double-disc Extended and Unrated presentation have a loose, action-packed and familial vibe that gives fans full access to Rodriguez's one-man-studio approach to moviemaking. The director is featured twice on audio tracks: first, on the feature commentary, which provides a fun tour through the picture's production (as well as information on the upcoming Grindhouse DVD set, which will reunite the two pictures in their theatrical format), and later on the "10-Minute Film School," a fascinating breakneck run through the numerous visual and CGI effects that produced the film's most eye-popping effects, including McGowan's leg/machine gun. Most of the extras echo Rodriguez's informative and entertaining vibe--two featurettes cover the picture's male and female cast (the former offers affectionate tributes to the exploitation vets in the company, including Biehn, Fahey, Michael Parks, and Savini), while "Casting Rebel" is an amusing discussion of how Rodriguez came to bring his own son into the movie, as well as his refusal to disclose the fate of Rebel's character. "Sickos, Bullets, and Explosions" takes a look at Terror's extensive special effects through interviews with stunt coordinator Jeff Dashnaw and members of the visual effects team, while "The Friend, The Doctor, and The Real Estate Agent" chats with three non-actors, all pals of Rodriguez, who wound up with small but significant roles in the picture. The Extended and Unrated aspect of the set is limited to a few extended scenes and extra splatter (sorry, the infamous "Missing Reel" is not recovered for this set), while Grindhouse fans bemoaning the absence of the film's hilarious faux trailers will appreciate the inclusion of Rodriguez's hilarious Machete spot, with Danny Trejo as a death-dealing, lady-loving tough guy gunning for double-crosser Fahey. The set also includes an "Audience Reaction" track: Essentially, it's a whole track of whoops and hollers that allows the viewer to "experience" the film as if they were watching it in an actual grindhouse from back in the day. Its inclusion neither adds to or detracts from enjoying this DVD, but it's wholly indicative of the level of fun Rodriguez had making the picture--and wants to share with his fans. -- Paul Gaita

Instant Classic in my book December 31, 2008 Anthony Vera Look, if you enjoy low budget action packed horror movies like myself...this movie is right up your alley. Great tongue-in-cheek acting from the whole cast. Its great to see vets like Michael Biehn, Tom Savini, and Jeff Fahey on the screen. Bruce Willis is underplayed perfectly. Rosario Dawson will forever be rememebered for this role. Theres plenty of blood/gore, non-stop action, and one-liners. Throw in some moody keyboards (an obvious ode to John Carpenter) and you have yourself one DAMN good popcorn zombie flick. The movie feels like a killer ride; enjoy the trip!
Gorelicious . December 21, 2008 themysticanimal (dubai, uae.) Bad gas in the air , turns people to hideous scares . Let the gorefest begin . The first film of his and Quentin Tarantino's Grindhouse double feature , Robert Rodriguez's tribute to the expolitation films - zombie genre with this film - is one hell of an R rated fun ride . And like most of his movies , it's all about having fun . Gore fun this time . And he delivers .Plot holes are still here , but it's supposed to be this way . That damaged film look is really great . Good dvd extras like Robert Rodriguez's commentary and his always appreciated 10 Minute Film School . But what made me give this dvd a five star is the Audience Reaction track option , where you can hear the audience reaction to the gore scenes and jokes while watching the film . I really like it . All non serious films should do the same . Thank you Mr.Rodriguez for casting Michael Biehn in the film .
Bloody Fun!! December 21, 2008 Throbbin' Hood (Limbo) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
There is lots of gore in this movie!! Blasting off people's heads, limbs & bodies torn apart, waves of blood being splashed everywhere! It's visually a really great movie! And it has Tom Savini, an added bonus for me!! Rodriguez is a great director! His style (similar to Tarantino) gave this movie what it needed, and could have only been directed by him. Coming off of a great visual like Sin City. And I love that it stars Freddy Rodriguez who played Rico in Six Feet Under! This movie shows his range of acting, and I'd hope to see him in more movies! So I gave it only 4 stars because it just seemed cheesy to me that they put a gun on some chick's stump. For some reason I can't get past this. Yeah, I can buy the fact that some gas causes zombie-like mutations, but it just seems cheesy to put a gun on some chick's cut-off leg. Maybe an arm (a-lah Army Of Darkness, but not a chainsaw), but a leg is just something I have a hard time with. Maybe it's because I'm a leg man and have a hard time staring at a smokin' chick with a machine gun for a leg. Of the 2 Gridhouse movies I like this one a little better. Nothing against Tarantino, but Rodriguez just had an edge somehow.
Disgusting fun December 18, 2008 H. Schneider (wechselhaft) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
As usual, when I find myself watching this kind of awful nonsense, it is one of my daughters who talked me into it. I don't like zombie movies. I don't like viral infection movies. Generally. There are always exceptions. So I say with a bad conscience: if you really got nothing better to do, spend a few hours watching madness break out after biological weapons run wild and out of control and create instant zombies around the narratively required handful of immune heroes. All in all, I am Legend makes much more sense. But then, who watches this for sense. It is all in outrageously bad taste. Just think of Tarantino's character trying to rape the female hero (who already lost a leg), while in advanced stage of infection, with required body parts disintegrating in slime and ooze... Yukki. I am sure the same heroine's stunts with the machine gun as leg replacement will make movie history. And BBQ fans will be delighted to learn from the chef that a drop of one's own blood adds the right amount of saltiness to the sauce... Yummi!
A MUST BUY/OWN/SHARE! December 2, 2008 Jamel L. Lytle (Upper Marlboro, MD USA) I love this movie! Everyone says it starts out slow but your not going to be dissapointed. When the chick uses the weapon as her leg...OMG, This movie rocks!!! I own the Grindhouse sound track to Death Proof, another movie worth Buying/Owning and sharing!
