OK December 30, 2008 Watcher In this film about women working in the maquiladora's in Juarez being murdered, the production values don't seem to be very high, but the story is interesting and the acting is good. (How come Antonio Banderas isn't listed in the little picture above?) The story could have been fleshed out a bit more. The number of murder victims is appalling, and it doesn't look like things are getting any better. There was another big story in the paper about violence in Juarez just a couple of weeks ago.
The yellow devil of Juarez December 13, 2008 R. Bagula (Lakeside, Ca United States) The exploitation of Mexicans in in the bordertown of Juarez doesn't end with long hours, poor working conditions and low pay. The investigation of wide scale rape and murder of women is a story that involves the lead actress in a nightmare that robs her of more than just her best friend. That this movie got made during the Bush years is somewhat amazing. I hope it circulated well in Washington D.C. There is nothing worse than murder on this scale, except maybe covering it up?
simply terrifying September 18, 2008 Piper Davenport "bookworm" (Detroit, MI) This movie was absolutely one of the most riveting, edge-of- your-seat films that I've seen in recent years. The story of a reporter investigating a series of brutal murders in a small town on the Mexican/US border seems as if it would be riddled with cliches but director Gregory Nava handles the film with a grim reality that may be hard for some reviewers to swallow. That the movie didn't receive more critical acclaim shows the lack of respect for women across the border and how uneasy the subject matter really is. Bordertown is not the first film to cry out against injustice but touches the subject matter with sublety. I didn't think that the movie was overly preachy and I was surprised at how good the chemistry was between Jennifer Lopez and Antonio Banderas. I also liked the supporting cast was made of fresh faces and not the same six degrees of Kevin Bacon (no offense to him!) pancake jam that seems to permeate Hollywood movies lately. I literally sat on the edge of my seat and at one point, Bordertown became so intense that I had to turn it off. It's sad though that the movie was booed and villified by critics and only won an award overseas. Still, I don't always listen to the movie critics and I'm glad that it didn't. If you can stomach a thriller with a penchant for the grotesque, then see this movie. I can't promise you will like Bordertown or even love it but you will learn from this movie.

Sloppy, agenda driven movie August 25, 2008 J. Ross 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
It could have been an interesting movie...set in lawless Juarez, with its outrageous drug violence and corrupt police all as a backdrop to the true story of the unsolved murders of hundreds of young women. But the folks who made the movie are more concerned with telling us how corporations are bad than actually weaving a plausible narrative into fact. It appears the only true link between the murders and corporations is the fact that some women were killed/disappeared during their commute. (How many...the majority? the vast majority? 10, 200?) And that is evidence of a massive conspiracy leading us to blame NAFTA and corporate greed for serial murder? Hey, it's the movies.
