    4 out of 5 stars A Look At Lagerfeld   November 19, 2008
Lagerfeld Confidential is an interesting look at Karl Lagerfeld. If you want a glimpse into the man behind Chanel, and his own line, this documentary will provide one. See him designing, photographing Chanel ads, walking the catwalk at the end of his shows. Watch him pack for a trip, see racks upon racks of his clothing, and try to count all the books and magazines stacked around his desk!

If you are looking for insight into what it takes to become a designer, or how a designer goes about creating a collection, you will not find it here. Much of the documentary is in French, with subtitles, so be prepared to watch and read (unless you speak French) in order to get every word.

    "Lagerfeld Confidential"

    A Fashion Icon

    Amos Lassen

Director Rodolphe Marconi gives the viewer something of the mystery of Karl Lagerfeld by showing what goes on in the family life of the somewhat enigmatic international fashion icon.
For two years Lagerfeld worked with Marconi and the result was over 200 feet of film, most of it intimate. We get to see Lagerfeld designing a dress privately, giving public interviews, we see his work as a painter and photographer, and we see his collection of art books, learn of his work for Chanel and visit the Lagerfeld gallery. We also see him behind the scenes at international fashion shows and with celebrities from all over the world.
We learn secrets. We discover that Lagerfeld yearns for knowledge, that he loves movies and fine paintings, that he adores art deco. When he is away he sends gifts of chocolates to his assistants every Monday and after every fashion show he invites his employees to take what they want and this means that they are able to take with them some valuable creations.
Little has been known about the man's personal history--his childhood was dark, he rocked in the 80's. He was angry that Dior got the post at Chanel but then Lagerfeld began his own ascent. He can be tyrannical and he can laugh for hours and make others do the same. His life as a loner was changed by romance but he was later devastated by the death of the person who had shared his life
The film "Lagerfeld Confidential" is "a digression in the existence of a man who is a complete prisoner to the whirlwind of life, culture, art and books, condemned to never quench his thirst for knowledge and obliged to deal with media hysteria", says director Marconi. He further maintains that Lagerfeld is "part of French and worldwide heritage". Men like Karl Lagerfeld are threatened with extinction; his life is like fiction. He has been writing his memoirs but he will not allow them to be published and his life is one of intrigue. He is larger than life. With his many eccentricities, he has reached his pinnacle. He is a deep thinker and has a personal philosophy about life and fashion that makes good sense. He can face injustice and deal with it. He says his work is his life and lives in a world of shiny surfaces.
This is what the film lacks. There is so much about Lagerfeld to know and just when we think we are going to learn something we don't. What we get is an outside perspective and we do not get much more. But his personal life is really none of our business anyway. Just the same, it would have been nice to know.

As a fan of fashion, I knew that this film would give me the insight I was looking for. This documentary is the first time Karl Lagerfeld allowed a director to follow his life. It unveils the influence this legendary desginer has on the fashion world. I truly recommend this title for ALL who are fans of all things fashion.
