Amazon.com It's easy to assume this is just another dumb redneck comedy from Burt Reynolds's years of underachievement. But it's not bad as a dumb redneck comedy at all. Directed by career stuntman Hal Needham, Smokey and the Bandit is just a goofy chase starring a bunch of Reynolds's Hollywood cronies. New to the job as film boss, Needham brings a silly but energized sensibility to the production and an action man's need to see things moving. But he also has a distinctive feeling for relationships, and he's good with a joke. Put all that together, and Smokey is, at the very least (and unlike its sequels), a simple and original pleasure. --Tom Keogh

68 Extra Fat and 12 Dwarf... December 16, 2008 Daniel S. Kuipers (Schererville, IN) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This movie has always held a special place in my heart, and there is no better movie to take with you on a road trip than this here (although there are very few watching any HDDVD's in a moving vehicle, I'm sure). Having owned this on VHS and DVD, I thought it might be silly to repurchase this again. How much improvement could be made? Amazingly, this copy is wonderful. The picture and colors are crisp as can be, the sound of the Trans Am peeling out is uncanny, and I have never enjoyed this movie better. The special features (which I believe may be holdovers from the special edition) are worth watching too. Get this while they still have some to sell, it is worth it!
It's stupid but it's fun; mainly stupid, but still fun... December 15, 2008 Andrew Ellington (Mulholland Drive) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
Burt Reynolds wasn't always the best judge of character when it came to selecting a film script. He had some great choices (`Deliverance') and then some awful ones. This one is kind of in the middle. It's not a smart comedy by any means, but it does have a campy sort of fun quality to it; and thanks to a star making turn by Sally Field it is at least memorable. It's not going to be a film that you're going to want to watch over and over again, but it's one that you'll want to watch at least once. Reynolds plays Bandit, hired to run a tractor trailer full of beer over county lines by some rich guy and his little sidekick. The Bandit gets his buddy Cledus to play along and the two of them set off to make some quick cash breaking the law. When the young and spunky Carrie jumps into Bandit's car, wedding dress and all, they become the target of a vengeful sheriff who is intent of making Carrie pay for running out on his son on their wedding day. Hilarity ensues; sort of. `Smokey and the Bandit' (`Smokey' being the police) has a lot going on for the entire running time. There is not a dry moment, which is a good thing for it delays the impact of stupidity. That is to say that it never gives us a moment to ponder over just how ridiculous the movie really is. Field is all sorts of awesome here as well, and that makes up for a lot of the plots holes. She's funny and charming and just gorgeous to look at (I just LOVE her) and has a spark of chemistry with Reynolds that helps make the budding romance part of the movie a little more believable. Reynolds is fine, nothing special but he's never dull either. Jackie Gleeson is a mess, seriously. I had just finished watching `The Hustler' (for which he had received an Oscar nomination) before watching this one and so when I saw the drastic difference I was blown away. His performance is nothing short of awful here, seriously. So, watch it for Sally and in all honesty it is fun, but it's not choice entertainment as far as I'm concerned. I'll probably never watch it again, but I'm glad I saw it once. I don't think I'll be checking out the sequels (I hear they are nothing to write home about anyways). There are far too many movies to be seen to waste my time on something not worth seeing.
Great Late 70's Anti-Establishment Truckin' Comic Flick October 10, 2008 Curt Remmel (New York) Anti-establishment late '70s truckin' fun movie. Great flick with truckin', hot rods and CB radio-speak. A magnificant late '70s American movie. Great cast. Burt is perfect, as is Jackie Gleason as the ultimate redneck sheriff. (Jerry Reed is easy to ignore, but SHINED.) Sally Field shined as well. It's easy to see how Burt and Sally hooked up after this one in real life. The chemistry showed in the movie and helped make it real. Very funny. You need to watch it for what it's worth. They were'nt trying for an Oscar. (Thank goodness.) If you like a simple plot with car-chase action, you will LOVE this movie.
A movie any American should love September 3, 2008 drslyfield (Republic of Texas) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
"East Bound and Down" is one of the great country songs, and this movie is the greatest road movie ever made, the redneck "Easy Rider," the AMERICAN "Easy Rider" (as Patton said, "Americans love a winner and will not tolerate a loser!"), filled with car chases and car wrecks, one babe, a beautifully ridiculous story, the great Jerry Reed at his weary but sarcastic redneck best, and Burt R.'s mustache at its cheesiest. It's the movie those two hippie goofs in "Easy Rider" might have made if they'd taken themselves less seriously. In "Smokey and the Bandit" one of the protagonists gets the babe, both get the cash and then let it ride on a double-or-nothing, and go on to greater adventures. At least one of the hippies in "Easy Rider" was unable to close the deal with a chippie, and both died in the mud in Louisiana. Killed by rednecks! "Smokey and the Bandit" is worth watching at any time, even with commercial interruptions. Great enough to own a copy. Five stars.
