Rogue brings Australian filmmaker Greg McLean, whose previous effort was the harrowing thriller Wolf Creek, back to the horror fold with an effective and well-crafted monster movie that pits a boatful of tourists against the title beast: a king-size crocodile with an insatiable appetite. McLean wisely follows the paradigm outlined by Jaws and other notable giant creature features by keeping his croc largely offscreen for the pic's first third, focusing instead on his human cast, which includes Michael Vartan(Alias) as a coolheaded American travel writer and Silent Hill's Radha Mitchell as the tour guide (Wolf Creek fans will note that film's antagonist, John Jarrett, among the ill-fated travelers). Once the monster makes its spectacular entrance by capsizing the boat, the suspense kicks into high gear as the tourists are faced with an unenviable choice: swim for their lives or wait until the tide overtakes their refuge on a tiny island. Surprisingly, McLean doesn't sacrifice quality in his pursuit of broader audience appeal; the award-winning special effects are top-notch, but so are the performances and photography, which capture the rough beauty of Australia's Northern Territory. Likewise, characters are not simply bodies waiting to be chomped; McLean's script takes the time to build them into full-bodied people, which adds a level of substance and sympathy to the story. All in all, Rogue is the meatiest in the spate of killer croc pics of recent years, and worth a look for those who were intrigued by Lake Placid or Primeval. The unrated DVD includes commentary by McLean as well as a battery of making-of documentaries, which cover the film's inspiration (a real-life croc attack on an Aussie riverboat in the '70s) as well as its impressive technical aspects. --Paul Gaita

I had anticipated just another cheap version of 'Lake Placid', but this was so much better. For starters, the tension and suspense was held with expert skill and creative talent. It wasn't just a 'blood for the sake of horror' type of movie, real thought went into giving the characters depth. Second, the music moved me. Excellent use of strings to set a melancholy, dramatic tone that set me at ease so I could jump ten inches off the bed when the 'Croc hit the fan' so to speak. Finally, the robotic gator used was extremely realistic and filmed in such a way that you truly believed those chompers were real. Especially love the gator 'lair', that was more spooky then seeing people swim for their lives in water. I believe if clips of the lair were used in the trailer, this movie would've done far better on the screen. I would love to see it on a huge screen in 3D.

I was impressed with Rogue. The acting is solid and the movie is suspenseful. You have to watch it! The scenery is breathtaking. It's a beautiful movie with an ominous creature. Not too much gore. It's better than Lake Placid. I hope you enjoy it.

I thought this was kind of crappy and I am a "monster movie" fan. The story was basic and those who should get eaten by the giant croc, do. Lake Placid was a better GIANT CROC movie.
Another note: I am a fan of these Dimension Extreme films. If you watched this one and thought it was bad, don't be turned off by the "series" there are some good ones!

I am a big fan of giant creature movies.This is one of the best.Dont get me wrong,I loved "Lake Placid","Jaws","Anaconda"and the like,but they tended to give the creatures greater than human,almost devious personalities.Unless it was a part of the story,like "Deep Blue Sea" and the genetic mutant sharks,it may be enjoyable but ultimately not believable. A group on an Australian river tour accidently invades the territory of a huge crocodile,become trapped on a small island that will be gone when high tide comes in,and must escape and fight for survival.The actors are believable,the crocodile is believable as a predator acting on instincts instead of some super-intelligence.
I've watched 4 of the dimension extreme films(The company that gave us this movie)and I've enjoyed 2 of them(Rogue and DOA)and kind of hated 2 of them (Diary of the Dead and Storm Warning).
Anyway,try this film if you like monster/giant creature movies.You won't be sorry.

Well worth renting or even owning. If you're into killer creature flicks this one ranks among the best I've seen. Far better than Primeval and more realistic than Lake Placid the movie offers a good story with fine acting and a beautiful and forbidding setting. The fact that the movie is so realistic helps boost the suspense, so much for giant digital crocs this one actually felt made of flesh and blood. It's a pity this movie didn't get more publicity it was good enough in my opinion for widespread theatrical release, especially when one considers some of the absolute garbage that has hit the theaters this year alone.
