Great look at the Count July 1, 2008 rayjazz (las vegas, NV) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is another great DVD, in color, well shot, with an all star cast of musicians. In the spirit of keep this brief, I agree with the other reviewers, Joe Williams was the best performer of the vocalists. Makes you want more of him. This one is worth owning.
Great Historical Value March 3, 2008 Ole Kristensen (Calumet, MI) It's a shame that this recording was not done before Basie's arthritis became so debilitating. It would have been great to have seem him in top form at the piano. Nevertheless, the band performance is great. Joe Williams, Sarah Vaughn, Tony Bennett and George Benson are obviously at the peak of their careers. The sound could have benefited from digital enhancement, however. Moreover, the DVD is very awkwardly produced by Kultur. It is frustrating to attempt to pick and choose the performances you want to see and hear. The interface is just miserable. But the performances are rewarding, once you find them.
Basie February 13, 2008 Aalf J. Molenberg (Mill Park, Vic., Australia) What can one say about Basie and his Band, in my book the best swing band ever., My favourite ?, it would have to be Booty's Blues, top music by two great artists, and who said that music cannot be fun as well.
Tribute to the Count! January 1, 2008 Douglas Walters (Broken Arrow, OK) For lovers of Count Basie and his contribution to our music history, this DVD is fantastic and will bring a tear to your eye. It is a wonderful and long tribute to the man so many loved. The quality of the sound track leaves just a little to be desired, but none the less, works just fine. With high tech sound systems, the track could have been a bit better. It also talks a bit about the Man and his history. All valuable info. I highly recommend this video. Any Basie lover needs this in his/her collection.
Music from a great era. July 6, 2007 John R. Traxler 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I watch this DVD at least once a week and can't get enough of it. I am a bit biased, I suppose, since I am a musician who worked in Vegas for 16 years and knew many of the stars personally. Kenny Hing, the featured tenor man, was on our band for 5 years. Anyone who loved the big band era will love this one.
