Amazon.com Ben Stiller and the Farrelly brothers bring out the best in each other. In The Heartbreak Kid, Stiller plays Eddie Cantrow, who--persuaded by his father and friends that he's commitment-phobic--marries a gorgeous and seemingly ideal woman named Lila (Malin Akerman, The Brothers Solomon) that he's been dating for several weeks. But after the wedding, things start to go awry... the least of these being that on their honeymoon, Eddie meets a woman who might truly be the girl of his dreams (Michelle Monaghan, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang). As in There's Something About Mary, writers/directors Bobby and Peter Farrelly push Stiller away from his increasingly schticky "tense guy" persona and draw out his sweeter, more multilayered earnest side. On his end, Stiller provides a human core to what could just be a festival of raunch and absurdity (the movie features aroused donkeys, deviated septum jokes, and digitally-enhanced body hair, among other items of questionable taste). It only takes a quick comparison with Jim Carrey in Me, Myself & Irene or Jack Black in Shallow Hal to see what a surprisingly delicate balance that is. The Heartbreak Kid may not be quite as wildly sublime as There's Something About Mary, but it comes extremely close, with kudos to Akerman for her unrestrained nuttiness. --Bret Fetzer

RATED R? TRY X to the MAX! December 28, 2008 M. Joseph Ok, so my party of 15 (my terrier, monkey, and caterpillar-science project (Fluffy), and selected friends) rented this CRAP LOAD for a night's viewing. Um...well...little did we know that this movie was freaking PORN! Do not show this to anyone! Do not watch this! It is sinful! YOU ARE SINFUL for considering buying this movie! I AM SINFUL for watching this! [but i went to confession...which reminds me the WORLD is SINFUL...cause not many people go to that anymore] Anyway, BEN STILLER is UGGGGLLLLLLAAAAYYYY (hideous, mr. boombastic, mr. not-fantastic) This just makes me want to go WATSCH! WATSCH! WATSCH! to the director, actors, actresses, and anyone associated to the film's conception! So to do something better with your time and to distract you from this atrocity and save your precious time (FYI...we don't live forever), watch the DARK KNIGHT or listen to a LEONA LEWIS CD [aka...spirit] or a leona lewis song [aka...BLEEDING LOVE...aka...song of the year [2008]) <3 Mrs. Priestly
greaaaat December 25, 2008 A. Pedicino (New York) laugh out loud funny movie...my boyfriend and I still say "love love love" to each other after seeing it together
Laugh Out Loud Funny December 14, 2008 J. Campbell (Long Island, NY USA) I cant stop watching this movie. Ben Stiller is completely hilarious and Carlos Mencia enhances the experience. I cant understand why other reviewers gave this movie such a low rating. Its either you're into the farrelly brothers comedy or your not, there's no in between. Definitely a comedy worth owning.
Come on, what were you expecting??!! This is a R rated comedy... and a very fuunny one! December 6, 2008 D. nichols (austin, tx United States) Ok, first off it is very coarse, and totally in line with what I could expect from the Farrelly bros. If you thought that it was a romantic comedy, than you were mistaken, and may have been disappointed. It is a comedy... a very funny one. If you are the type of neurotic person that is typified here, than you may be offended. If you are expecting wholesome family comedy, then you WILL be offended. But for anyone who became romantically involved with a closet case screwball, or knows someone that has, then you will laugh more each time you see it. It is R rated for a reason....in fact, I would say several very funny reasons. And Stiller, along with all the cast, proves that they have not only depth of character, but a sense of humor for electing to be in it. Heck, I've seen it four times, and I've found something new to laugh at each time. So many little details. That's why I'm buying it!
Dirty, Filthy, Vulgar, Crass, Offensive, waste of Celluloid November 12, 2008 Larry C (New Jersey United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
What.....my title wasn't enough of a warning.....you want details? You can't handle the details! Friends have we lowered ourselves to the point to say this is entertainment? What are Ben Stiller and Michelle Managhan doing in a cesspool like this? This "movie" is an offense to every adult who cherishes a decent and entertaining romantic comedy. This is so vile I almost got sick from trying to watch it! I had to shut the sound off after ten minutes and finally scanned to get to the end. Pathetic and creepy! Disgusting!
