Amazon.com Tough but moving, Thunderheart is an unusual story about an arrogant FBI agent (Val Kilmer) who participates in a federal investigation of a murder on an Oglala Sioux reservation. Kilmer's character is part Sioux himself, a detail that leaves him cold as he sets about pushing his way through the community to find facts on the case. In time, however, he begins to feel an ethnic tug and grows increasingly sympathetic to the locals and hostile toward his fellow G-men, much to the dismay of his agency mentor (Sam Shepard). The script is based on real events that occurred on the Pine Ridge Reservation in 1975 in South Dakota (involving an armed standoff between Indian activists and the FBI, an event that prompted Thunderheart director Michael Apted to make a companion documentary, Incident at Oglala). The conclusion of Thunderheart feels like politically charged whimsy, but the real strength of the film is Kilmer's outstanding performance as a man in transformation. Apted's clear-eyed depiction of the Sioux's spiritual and cultural continuity with the past has none of the cloying romanticism of other films about Indians. Produced by Robert De Niro. --Tom Keogh

Val Kilmer and Graham Greene deliver stellar perforamnces. December 28, 2008 S. M. Ulmen (Mankato, MN USA) Although an older film, "Thunderheart" still presents a very realistic depiction of reservation life among the Sioux Indians of South Dakota. The clash of cultures combines with the greed and corruption of the US government to create a tense but thorough, Tony Hillerman type mystery story. Steven M. Ulmen, author of "Blood on the Prairie - A Novel of the Sioux Uprising."
great movie December 25, 2008 Sally Sorour It was a great movire that keeps you hooked. Since watching it, I couldn't think of anything else. Very realistic portrayal; the poor living conditions; knowledgable about what happens. Val Kilmer completely transforms. He is a lot simpler at the end; wearing simpler clothes and driving a sdimpler car. He drives out of the reservation rather instead of flying as he did in the beginning. Why did the government send him to investigate the murder when they knew who did it? Them? The guy in the wheelchair and the Indian cop solved it for him. They killed Maggie and the first guy because they knew that the government was contaminating their lakes with uranium.
Eye opener November 26, 2008 Navaman (California) Great and outstanding early performance by Val Kilmer prefaces his mega acting career. Wonderfully humorous to lighten the intense drama that this movie is. Reminded me of times I spent in Montana with the Crow and Northern Cheyenne and some the lingering issues they had with the federal government even into the 1990's and perhaps still exist today.
