Wes Craven's 1984 horror film is a better movie than it is generally credited for being. Forget the tawdry sequels; this highly original, almost surrealist work stars Robert Englund as a mutilated monster who kills teenagers during their dreams. Craven, who only directed one Elm Street sequel (Wes Craven's New Nightmare), takes the Hitchcockian step of layering in psychological explanations for the terror and then proving them all irrelevant in the face of mindless evil. The horror in the film is emotionally raw, in contrast to the overimaginative set pieces of most of the sequels that followed; and the final scene is as deeply unsettling as anything Luis Bunuel ever committed to film. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Pretty Definative   November 8, 2008
This 2 disc definative edition of the film is truly definitive. It's picture is even better that the The Nightmare on Elm Street Collection. Besides picture quality the extras are very informative. So if you already own the The Nightmare on Elm Street Collection this DVD is worth paying for.

5 out of 5 stars The film that started it all!   October 15, 2008
Since the NOES series is my favorite horror series of all time, I thought I'd write out reviews for all the movies.

Nightmare On Elm Street...an instant classic. How you can you beat an idea like falling asleep, being chased by someone like Freddy Krueger, killed in your dream, and dying for real while you sleep? It probably has to be one of the most innovative ideas in horror, ever!

The pace in this movie is great. Doesn't go too fast, doesn't go to slow where you lose interest. It's nice to be able to follow Nancy on her downward spiral into insanity. And how could you not get freaked out at how Tina was thrashed around the room? And how much blood shot up out of Glen's bed? This movie is a masterpeice.

I am almost ashamed to admit it, but I just watched this movie today for the first time in my life. I am also guilty of seeing "Freddy vs Jason" before this original Freddy film, and unfortunately that was my first taste of Kreuger. That was obviously nothing compared to this original, made 20 years earlier. It may look a lot cheaper (and it is with about the $2 million budget that was used) but the original Nightmare on Elm Street is mush more effective in creativity and scaring us, and even myself this day.

Though the budget is slim, I must admit the film made the most of it. Cheap effects actually work and are sometimes gritty and gruesome, and the film loves blood. Though there are only a few blood scenes, it is practically a blood bath. The acting, as we all know is always below par in horror films, actually is stronger here than most horror films I have seen, especially from this particular era. Nancy Thompson (Heather Langnekamp) is a strong character in the leading role. Johhny Depp (Nancy's boyfriend Glen Lantz) is introduced for the first time in Nightmare on Elm Street, making his first Hollywood start very capable as well. Lt. Thompson (John Saxon) is somewhat effective as both cop and father, though far from great and Nancy's mother Marge (Ronee Blakley) is the only charcater that really annoyed me, with her very emotionless acting at times and monotone dialouge. And then there is Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund), who is legend, whether you've seen the movie or not.

This is another slasher film, but gets creative. It's creativity is perhaps its strongest point. The screams and murders all take place in the dream world, which might sound silly at first, but actually makes for a much scarier scenario. Whatever damage Freddy does to his young victims is permament when they awake (if they do). And because it is in a dream world, rules can be broken, and in this case, Freddy can just pop out of nowhere - and he does. It is at these moments I literally jumped. It felt good too, it's been awhile since I watched a movie that made me jump on several occasions. The horror movies today don't seem to do it as well, and here is a fine example of a classic with great old school scare. The beauty of it is, it combines some gore and plenty of blood with those great scares, so you get a little bit of both.

Wes Craven has proven he is ever bit as genious as some of the other horror greats such as John Carpenter and Clive Barker. Craven too, has given us a horror classic that has managed to survive as a favorite for so long for it's creativity and a sickening villain in Freddy Kreuger who just won't stay out of our nightmares. Jaws kept us out of the water, Michael Myers out of closets, and Freddy will keep you awake.

1 out of 5 stars made no sense   September 30, 2008

When I was younger I use to be scared to even watch these films but now that I have watched some of them(this one included) I feel they make no sense at all. Of course if you like the older horror films in the 80's this one will be for you. But I personally think they should have stopped with this movie(just my opinion) If by any chance you have never watched these before and don't know what they're like then rent them first to see if your gonna like them.

3 out of 5 stars Good Movie, Good price   September 27, 2008

This is either the best or one of the best Wes Craven movies he has made. It changed the way we look at horror movies. 12.99 is a good price for the this edition even though you can get it at Target for 9.99.
